im sending out a bunch febuary due to spring training reports.

That's my plan too. For the offseason months, I am mainly sending to retired players or active players that have high success rates when sending to their homes.

Excellent! Thanks for that link!
So let me get this straight: Spring traning includes A players, AA players, and AAA too? So if I have a card from someone who plays Single A ball I sendf the card to the spring traning address? Is that correct?

Pods fan 22
12-31-2006, 01:12 PM
It depends, spring training may have people from their minor leauge roster their, but no guernentees, thats why you have to find a list with either their spring training roster or invatiess.

To is to look for projected team rosters for all the minor league levels. If you have noticed, the "sub" major league players play alot of the games in ST before the big boys come in so you have to look at the rosters and boxscores and send. From Maine, its three days mail.

This can give a headsup to who is playing where and you cna plan your card ordering.

The Red Sox site is excellent at this as the forcasted rosters make it real nice to get cards ahead of time. The Portland Sea Dogs, for example, have a "Welcome Back Dinner" b4 the season begins and to have cards of the players will make it a more memorial experince. The challange is to get the cards.....if I can't get them in time the TTM they go.

Pods fan 22

bill, do you have a site of the projected lineups for spring training?

From my expierence, spring training is a great time to get ttm autos. Although my success rate for ST goes down each year. A couple of things to remember though:

1. Pitchers and Catchers report sooner than the other players.

2. About 2 weeks into the ST season, most of the minor league players get sent down to the minor league ST camp. The camps are still (more or less) at the same fields, but the mail is often much more unreliable to them. I usually hold off sending requests to guys that are definately going to be playing Single A or AA until the season starts.

3. For the most part, players on the 40 man roster stay with the big club for most of the spring. You can find the 40 man roster on the teams web sites.

4. ST is a great time to get the coaches and visiting instructers graphs.

Hope this helps. This will be my 9th spring training to send out graphs. I am slowely going to cut down my ST requests, because my in season success rates are much higher. I still plan on sending about 50 letters out.

Don't games start in March for spring training?

I'm new to sending to Spring Training so I'm not sure how to do this much

Also, what does it mean pitchers and catchers report earlier?

Thank you for any help given

Pitchers and Catchers report to ST sooner than position players so they can begin throwing and long tossing. Teams have dates set for Pitchers and Catchers, and then there is a date for the remaining players, which is usually several days later.

Customer Index Cards...

I make lots of the index cards ahead of time. All AL and NL teams as well as Minor League teams and Negro Leagues. Then only issue with most ML teams is the logos cahnge over the years so I have to be carefull on what logo with what year the player's era.

The CIC just makes the whole thing fun for me....it takes alittle time to do but it also adds a more personal touch to the request.

Most players sign "boldly" on the front...right across the logo (hopefully)...some are kind of carefull not the "touch" anything and some in the case of Tommy Shields he did his on the back side.

I have had players sign the CIC and keep the cards :grouchy I have had players sign the CIC and fold them :grouchy But overall they work real well.

I write ahead of time too...but I wait a bit because there seems to alot of signing contracts and trading that goes on b4 ST. Write the letters but don't do the envelopes yet is what I would suggest.

The other thing to keep in mind as some players will respond a long time after you send. Its not uncommon that you might get a response back about now!!!

Thanks for the help Bill-I was checking what teams some of the guys im writing to are with and alot of them are free agents, so I keep checking them. I was thinking more along the lines of how I should write the letter itself, 1 Page(thats how much I usually write to former players) or shorter?

What I do is rub (with my thumb) the spot that I want to get autographed first. Then I rub the card on some denim pretty rough. Not hard enough to damage the card, but still pretty firm. It seems to work for me.

He didn't include and extra card BUT when he told me his most memorable moment of his MLB career (which he said was getting inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame), he signed the index card under his moment..so that counts. And geez was I excited today when I got home from the card shop! I went to the card shop after my brother went to get more information about college and I got home and my mom was like "Ryan, this is yours..and this..and this..oh, this too." I was so happy.

My local card shop, has older "common" cards for at least 70 % below beckett.

For older cards these are my options at least;

1. I make homemade cards. Check my site out. I actually enjoy making the homemade ones more than just sending out "real"cards.

2. Check out ebay or other auction sites. You can usually find good deals on lots.

3. Sports lots.com has a great selection of older cards.

4. Trade- many people (including me) are more than willing to help out fellow collectors.

5. Go to a large sports card show. Once a year, here in N. Texas, there is a huge show. Last year there were at least 15 dealers with nothing but rows and boxes of older "commons" from the 50's to 80's. You can usually find great deals on the last day of the show. This past year, I picked up 50 cards from the 1965-68 topps sets for 9 bucks.

Hope this helps.

In risk of looking like an idiot, I must ask... Where do you send them? Is there an address for each player, or do you just send to the ball park?

And, to be clear, I write a letter, send it to them with a ball card, a SASE and they send it back signed? Do the cards get bent up in the mail, should I protect them any?

I just bought my first pack of cards today, and was rambling around these forums... I'd never even heard of TTM, but I am so totally excited about it....

Thank you...

I send to homes and ballparks. I usually send to homes of the retired players and to the ballparks of current players. I send a letter, card(s), and SASE. I dont protect the cards because one time I got back a plastic cover on the card signed rather than the card itself....

Good Luck!

Wow, that's a pretty amazing story!

I put two index cards in the SASE, with the card(s) I'm asking the player to sign in between them. Most times, they sign them and return them to that position. The index cards help protect the card in the SASE on it's way back ot me.

Also what have the successes been with sending OMLB's C/O Stadium to players or is everyone mostly doing cards? This seems to be a great hobby and am interested in picking it up this year, you guys on here have been very informative, I have been reading through alot of the TTM threads, I think i got the basics down now. Somethings i would like to try and get would be a ball signed by Preston and Don Mattingly, Tony Pena SR/JR, The three Molina brothers and Cecil and Prince Feilder. Not sure if those are high expectations but worth a shot i think.

No. It's a Federal holiday. Any day that I am home from work, except weekends, means no mail.

Nice to see that you are collecting the "family" players....Rick and Paul...is that the 85 Topps....Diego dad of David and Hariston...3rd generation. At the ballpark with him, though.

Yes, they are fun to get in combo. It was the 1977 or 1978 Topps brothers card. I also got the Forsch brothers on their card (3 no hitters between the two).

My first success of 2007:

Bill Monbouquette 1/1 (7 days)

Mr. Monbouquette also signed the two index cards I enclosed to protect the card. If anyone wants to send me a SASE, I'll gladly send you one of them (PM me for address, first come, first serve).

Also got a Paul Konerko in a trade. As one of the few native Rhode Islanders in the majors right now, he's a favorite of mine.

Congrats on the first success of 2007. Rocco Baldelli is also from RI, as is Bill Almon. Mr. Almon is a very good TTM signer and still lives in RI (Greenwich, I believe).

I have gotten Mr. Almon both TTM and in person (he spoke at a SABR meeting last summer).

Other than Baldelli (who played his HS ball a few miles from where I sit right now) and Konerko, the only other Rhode Islanders currently active in the majors are Dan Wheeler and Chris Iannetta (who got into 21 games with the Rockies as a rookie).

I've had no luck with Baldelli TTM, but haven't tried Wheeler or Iannetta yet.

Baldelli will sign through his foundation for a fee. Almon is a smart guy in many ways. Turned down the Padres in 1971 to go to Brown on a baseball scholarship and in 1974 was the 1st overall pick of the Padres. Worked out in many ways for him.

Thanks for the info. Ha ha...looks like his foundation is based out of his old high school...right down the road here in Warwick.

He sure seems to have done well for himself, and to have no regrets. Can't beat that!

Not currently in the majors, but Pat Combs used to be responsive TTM. Sorry, just thought of him because he was another native Rhode Islander.

Thanks for the info...have to see if I can track down some cards of him.

At one point, I hoped to get as many native Rhode Islander signatures as possible, but it's proven a bit tricky simply because there have only been 72 players from RI, and about half are still living...but many either don't have cards, or I've had very little luck tracking them down. I'll have to see if I can't get a want list together and see if I can get some more local guys sigs, though.

Interesting fact...RI has produced only 72 players, but three Hall of Famers (Nap Lajoie, Hugh Duffy and Gabby Hartnett)!
