Well, here we go again! :D
Model number one (http://baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=45278) is finished (pics coming soon, I promise) and it's on to the next project. I want to thank all of you that have offered support and encouragement on these projects over this past year. Without your kind words this all wouldn't be. I thank all of you from the bottom of my heart. :)
I think this new project will be more in tune with my cohesive visions and inspiration of ballpark design, rather than a mish-mash of older ideas in model number 1. (http://baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=45278)
Also, I'll be using some new tools, techniques and materials that will speed up and polish the building process. I hope to cut the build time down from 10 months to 6 months.
Dimensions:
LF foul line: 293
LF alley: 370-403
Center field: 425
RF alley: 375-406
RF line: 312
Backstop: 68
Height of fences:
LF: 7 ft high
CF: 7 ft high
RF: 9 ft - 18 ft high
Highlights:
Wide open centerfield area containing bullpens, Towering main CF scoreboard/sculpture; trees; gardens; fountains; picnic areas etc..
40,000 seats in two decks (Lower and upper); Press box, 50-60 luxury suites and 5 party suites located above the upper deck seats; 10-12 VIP suites located behind home plate.
Large cable/truss supported sun roof covering 90% of upper deck.
"Sleek contemporary/Streamline Moderne/" sort of inspiration for the exterior architecture (May change as inspired).
Cable cantilever upper deck (Think PNC Park, but with the upper deck moved 30-50 feet closer to the diamond).
Oh, and no red bricks or ballpark-green seats. I haven't decided on a seat color or final exteroir design/building design yet. That's always an eveolving concept for me. Maybe a soft pastel shade(s) for the seats.
I guess that's all for now. Stay tuned for updates!

Nothing but oohs and ahhs here Elvis. Have you ever thought about doing a model but letting some of the people on this forum vote on its features?
Then maybe you could auction it on ebay or something. You have a bit of a following on this forum of those who love your models and designs. I am sure if you were to do something like that then some from here would bid on it.
Then again it might not be worth it since it takes an awful lot of work to assemble and design one of these models.
I still think maybe putting polls up for design features on one model would be interesting. Anyway, just a thought.

Thanks. :) No. The magic of building these is the Inspiration that fuels creative energy. I can't give that up - that's what it's all about really, although I still would love to hear any and all suggestions or questions.

Yes, I plan on eventually selling this piece, by auction or a direct sale. I haven't set an asking price yet.

Don't worry. :D

Supports being installed. The support skeleton is made of 3/16 inch thick gatorfoam.

Yeah man, exactly like that. :clapping As long as it is done right (and I am sure you can do it to a T) it will look so innovative, fresh and will definately be a change in a great direction for ballpark look and feel. The grandstand layout is perfect in keeping everyone on top of it all.
The thing you would have to watch out for all the glass with a ton of people walking around, it would make it quite noisy. But aside from that the looks are awesome.
I love the classics as much as anyone else but I always feel hurt that no one can make one that does the older parks justice. This would definately be a step on a new tangent of elements.

Upper deck and walls installed.
Walls are gatorfoam (http://www.ares-server.com/Ares/Ares.asp?MerchantID=RET01229&Action=Catalog&Type=Product&ID=83263).
Upper deck is 1/16" in thick basswood.
Lower deck will be 1/32" thick.

Absolutely great, Elvis! I get more and more convinced that you can give HOK a run for it's money. ;)
Innovation is the key with these designs. If the ballpark concept has been done time and time again, you need to do something different to freshen things up. Elvis, you do a fine job of doing just that. Thanks. :clapping

I haven't been paying attention, I never knew you finished the 1st one! it's amazing! and I agree with giving HOK a run for their money.
Elvis,
You know I enjoy your work... I am simply posting in this thread just so I will be notified once you post again. ;)
I can not wait to talk you into doing Wrigley someday!

Looking good so far. Seeing the upper deck framing in place really shows how much further it overhangs than a place like PNC or Comerica. Did you decide on a height for the right field fence yet?
Elvis
01-09-2007, 01:00 AM
Thanks all. :)
Richard, the RF fence will vary in height, but I think I over-estimated a bit. All the lower deck seating platforms are in place now and it looks like LF and CF will be 7 ft high, while RF will be 9 ft high from the line to right-center, then slope higher, topping out at about 14 ft in deep right-center where the stands end. I've also added about a 25 ft section of the LF wall that will be about 25-30 ft high where the grandstands end - I decided to extend the concourse plaza alongside the grandstand to the outfield wall.
I've been making significant progress this last week (mainly due to having Shingles and having to stay home from work!). Plazas made and installed; outer balconies installed; most straight seating sections cut and sanded. I even painted some of the sections today (a soft light grey-blue)! I don't think I got to that stage on the last model until month 2! Using a band saw has dramatically cut the time involved. I think I can finish this project in even less time than I thought - maybe two or three months? We'll see.
Oh, and have I mentioned how cool gataorfoam is? :laugh
Photo updates soon!

Can't wait to see more pictures as it comes along.
So how did you come upon this Gatorfoam, and what is so great about it?
Well I'm always on the lookout for new tools and materials. I saw gatorfoam in my micromark catalog and it looked interesting so I bought some. As you may know I was previously using corregated cardboard for a lot of the internal structure of the models, mainly because of its thickness. But I was never happy with it because of its inconsistancy and weakness if the piece was cut to a fine point, for exaple, the end of a cantilever support. Well this gatorfoam is basically a replacement for the cardboard, but I've been so impressed with its versatility, unifornity, ease of cutting (both with a bandsaw AND hobby knife) and stregnth even at the small end of a support piece, that I've been using it in other places as well, like the outer balconies and outer support walls.
And did I mention it's cheap too? I bought $20 worth and it wound up being enough for 2 projects.
If I was using a larger scale, I might use it in even more applications in the model, but for my scale its 3/16" thickness translates to about 10 feet, which is too thick for many uses.

Here's a couple of photos. It shows progress thus far. The seat color is coastline blue. It photographs a little darker and more saturated than it actually is. Those are cantilevered balconies, not wings by the way. :D

EDIT: make that OF wall color, I don't mind that it has this color around the rest of the field.

Yes and no. Yes, in that I've grown tired of the common colors seen in most venues - the dark solid greens, blues and reds. I'm fond of the Dodger Stadium pastels, no doubt, and I already knew I was going to choose a pastel shade for this project.
No, in that my main motivation for the seat color was that it enhanced and fused with the exterior design, which is walnut and maple, with brushed nickel. The blue seen in these photos is not quite the true color - it photographs more red and more saturated than what it really is, a grayish-powder blue.
Once I photograph it in natural light, you'll see.
In this photo, you'll see the truer color in the foreground pieces still waiting to be installed.

Again, notice the difference in the way this color photographs depending on the light. It's too red in the sections already installed, and too green in the foreground. Weird.

I've said it before, but man, that looks cool.
If that dollar bill in the photo is a starting bid, you need to think on a much grander scale. How long before you get a template down for Wrigley and Fenway, get some guys to help you, and start cranking out twenty, thirty a month? Then you can move on to other stadiums, and start posting 'in progress' pictures of your house in Malibu. Barry Halper was basically a swap-meet peddler, but he made his moves at the right time. My advice would be to move on this now, before the Beckham fad hits. Soccer fans in the States will only buy look-a-like haircuts and instructional videos. Trust me.
We are about ready for another update here.

Hey Elvis, nice work. I wanted to ask you if you will be leaving the seating as it is now, (which looks good enough to me) or do you have a line on some miniature seats?
There is a guy who builds model ballparks and he did one of Fenway that he installed 35,000 seats in by hand. I'm almost ready to start one, and if this guy has seats, then I want seats, too.
Actually, although it may be impressive, model ballparks seem to look more appealing when the seating area is stepped down as in your photos. At one point I had entertained the idea of miniature M&Ms glued in to resemble fans. But then you'd have to put players on the field.

Hey guys, sorry for the delay in updates. I've had some personal stuff happen that kept be away from model building for most of February. The last two weeks I've been making slow but steady progress on some exterior work. I haven't done much on the interior since the last photos except for some work on the sky boxes and the club deck behind home plate.
I'll post some new photos soon. Thanks for your interest! :)

M&Ms :laugh
No, no individual seats. The scale's too small. Each seating section is about as wide as a dime. The detail would be lost at that size. The fellow you're talking about, who does fantasic work, works in a larger scale than I do, so that's why he creates individual seats.

If you are looking to build on that scale where fans would be the size of M&Ms or a little smaller, I've been creating "fans" that size for years (see images below). Just press together the sides of little shreds of paper about .75 inches by .75 inches. They end up fitting pretty well togetherr and are easy to make, and actually end up looking surprisingly decent, at least in what I've found.

really sweet thanks for the update - the shape of the seating sections looks different, I mean those seats behind homeplate! I've never seen that before! it's interesting - at least it is different. I don't know if I like it or not, its not curved like a normal seating bowl, its really, different!

I know that people will try to make every seat face home plate, not the outfield lol. (sidelines)
Thanks. :homeplate: Actually the seats are all facing 2B in the design, even if the sections are not. The seats are pivoted-style:

The seats in the "corners" will be angled even steeper. Cool, huh?

The bullpens will be behind the outfield walls next to the plazas off the lower concourses. I have a concept on the scoreboard but haven't constructed it yet. Beyond the walls will be a modern garden, circular round-a-bout driveway and public square and some other neat touches.
Timeline may be summer. :nosleep:
