Dec 14 - The East Valley Tribune is reporting that the Diamondbacks are talking to the Rangers about a trade for reliever Akinori Otsuka, 34, who could challenge incumbent Jose Valverde for the D-Backs' closer job.
In return, the Rangers have inquired about young pitchers Dustin Nippert, Micah Owings and Enrique Gonzalez.
Owings is young and has had some success in the minors. Gonzalez is another young arm but not much time above AA.
If Gagne is healthy and can close i think its a great move.
Thoughts?

I would rather keep Akinori as an SU and insurance in case Gagne stumbles...

Yeah, I would rather keep otsuka too.
I dont trust gange enough yet and I really dont like the idea of trading another one of our loyal guys away for possible future decent pitchers when we are apparently playing to win "now".

Definitely Keep Otsuka....Why wouldn't the rangers ask for a CF? Byrnes, Upton, Chris Young...

I gotta say I am shocked. With as much help as we need at SP this is a chance to get 3 young arms for a 35 year old P who I don't see closing much after 1 or 2 seasons anyway.

It's still risky to trade a good setup/closer.Gonzalez is the only one I see starting though.

Given our SP I don't see us as playoff contenders unless we can add a top of the line starter. I have my doubts about the free agents that say they are interested. I think they have enough in the pen now for setup men and I think they can take a risk on Gagne.
