Are any of the new generation of ballparks (since Skydome) NOT designed by HOK?

NKS Inc. of Dallas designed The Ballpark in Arlington. (RF porch)

NBBJ of Seattle designed Safeco Field. Went WAY over budget but a jewel.

Ellerbe Becket designed Chase Field and Turner. (Both tri-deck [Yankee Stadium-style] designs)

HOK did all the rest.

So HOK did Shea Stadium too?

The new one slated to open in 2009, yes, and also the new Yankee Stadium.

360 Architecture (Kansas City, MO), Gensler Architects (Los Angeles, CA) and International Facilities Group (Chicago, Ill.) are designing the Fremont A's new stadium. May possibly break several "HOK" stereotypes.

You're referring to Citi Field. What about where they play now.. Shea?

That architect was Praeger-Kavanaugh-Waterbury, the same firm that designed the 1974 Yankee Stadium renovations.

And if that Praeger is Emil Praeger, Dodger Stadium as well.

How has HOK developped such a monopoly? I think that teams are realizing that HOK stadiums are becoming the cookie-cutters of today, and moving away from them.

HOK developed a monopoly simply because it had the experience. Most of the parks, like Cincinnati's, for instance, started being planned in the mid-'90s when HOK still was held in high esteem. In architecture circles HOK has lost some of that high respect. In fact Petco Park is regarded by many architects as the best designed park in the majors. The Architectural Record criticizes HOK for a lack of creativity that it says is evident in European soccer stadia, but personally I'd prefer an HOK construction.

Anymore, though, I find myself most respecting HNTB for its work with minor league ballparks. If you get a chance check out their portfolio. The parks seem to be much more unique and relevant to their communities. I have a feeling that as retro starts to get a little older we'll see a little difference between how those parks are viewed, and not one for the positive.

So is Petco done by HOK or no? I like it, from what I've seen.

Antoine Predock and HOK designed PETCO, although Predock was responsible for most of the "visual design" elements, while HOK took care of the nuts and bolts.

If it was a solo HOK project, it probably would have looked like quite a different stadium.

So from what I take from this thread, teams are most likely going to start moving away from HOK from now on.

Does anyone know who designed this field?
Fifth Third Field, Toledo OH (http://www.ballparkreviews.com/toledo/53tol.htm)

EDIT: It's HNTB. Have they done any MLB parks?

EDIT: Once again, I've answered my own question. Here is their site: HNTB Portfolio (http://www.hntb.com/portfolio.jsp?co=2). Click on Architecture Inc. and then Sports Architecture. They've done some neat stuff.

(Unfortunately) HOK is building the next three stadiums slated to open in the next three years (Yankees, Mets, Nationals). Only the A's new stadium is going with someone different...and their design shows it.

As I think I mentioned, I'm a big fan of HNTB. They are a really impressive company if you want to check them out. Their ballpark architecture is almost completely limited to the minor leagues, but they are responsible to some extent for the increased creativity in minor league ballparks. They would be a great pick for future MLB stadia.

As far as I know they haven't done any other minor league parks. But their other sports stadium jobs are really cool stuff! Check out their portfolio. (http://www.hntb.com/)

I already have, and I like what I see. I also contacted a person in the company. He said that, unfortunately, they have no Major League projects in the works right now :ughh. Hopefully an owner looking to build a new park will look at HNTB as a possible architect.

CBP was designed by EwingCole, an A&E firm in Philadelphia. They are also designing the new Giants/Jets stadium.

I'm not going to bash HOK too much.

True, the designs have gotten derivative as of late.

But considering all the trends pre-1992--astroturf, symetrical, circular dimensions, swiveling seating sections for quick multipurpose conversions, uniform fence heights, exposed concrete exteriors, etc., I'd take this generation of "cookie cutters" over the Riverfront/Three Rivers/Busch II/Veterans/Fulton-County/RFK Stadium "cookie cutters" any day.

CBP is an HOK ballpark. EwingCole helped too.

I'm in the process of switching all the content of my website to a new format (thus the link below is not a complete page) but the study may be of interest to you:

Interesting, they were in charge of UK's Commonwealth Stadium renovation and upgrades as well as the new UK basketball practice facility.

Hammel, Green & Abrahamson Inc. (HGA) will serve as the local architects for the new Twins park and will be focusing on the smaller details of the project.

HGA has designed many buildings in Minnesota including Canterbury Park and the Minneapolis Public Library.

Does anyone know who designed the AAA Memphis Redbirds ballpark? I haven't seen it firsthand but it looked nice when I watched the Civil Rights Game a month or so ago. It looks like it fits very nice into downtown Memphis.
