Happy birthday, guys! Loes is credited with one of my favorite quotes. After booting a ground ball that he should have snagged, a reporter, after the game, asked him about it. Loes replied, "I lost it in the sun."

Actually Loes' teammates backed him up on that. The sun in October came in through openings in the stands. The contrast from dark to light could in fact have caused that to be a true statement.

Correct! The ball was not a carpet hugger. Billy had to look slightly UP.

There's something just inherently right about Carl Erskine having a full life of 80 years. He was a great pitcher and a wonderful human being, but he made his mark on this earth as a superb father.
Many more, Oisk!

When Loes was with the Giants in '61, a writer asked him how he
would pitch Maris if Maris were going for #61. "A nice medium speed
fast ball, belt high."
Thank you, Billy
