Hey guys! I was wondering. How soon do top prospects get noticed? All I can say about that is at age 15 and having never even played a high school game, the best high school prospect I have seen in a long time, Donald Anderson, is on his way to the MLB. Remember that name, Donald Anderson!!!

well im 15 right now, and i know there have been showcases that me and my friends have been going too, where there have been college scouts and even a few pro scouts too. mostly, once you are on varsity, if you make a name for yourself, scouts will come and watch a game. If you do well, they will probly be back for another one. One thing i learned from coaches is that scouts not only look for your playing ability, but also how you handle yourself on the field emotionaly (not throwing helmets, picking up ur teamates) How old r u?

yeah im a senior in high school and I dropped out of baseball last year and if your on the varsity team and your a freshman your pretty well off. if you get on your sophmore year your good off too. you really wont see any scouts until junior if your lucky or senior year. This also depends on how big your school is and how big your area is on baseball

The problem is Stock will probably never get much better than he already is so his value will drop.

Well the article said he could throw 90 and hit 400 foot homers with wood bats, how much better does he need to be?

We have a very good star at our high school, Jordan Coffey, last year as a freshman had pittsburgh pirate scouts scouting him, he has an amazing curv and a fast ball that hit about 88 as a freshman, this kids got tons and tons of potential.

Man I cant wait for tryouts to start. I'm 14 (turning 15 on February) also here at my High School we got this dude John Capriotti and he made Varsity as a Freshman so he may get some scouts this year and years after that, if he stays healthy, and I'll probably make Varsity as a Freshman too and if you lead the team to State then that will get some PR from the scouts as well.

I pitch at this place with my pitching coach called "sports enhancement center" in bloomington and there is usually 1 or 2 scouts there everytime. I'm not sure exactly for which teams or if they are college scouts but I know there was a San Diego Padre scout there last time when i was pitching because my dad was talking to him.
Bloomington doesn't have any players that I know that are anything too special, Adam Seifer and Kyle Vaughn or the best I know by far though. Kyle can throw 80 mph and Seif touched about 80 today at our winter camp. They are both 14 but Kyle already has a 5 o'clock shadow going on. Adam has a pretty good arm but that's not what makes him good, he is a very fast runner (11 seconds going from home to home) and an excellent fielder and hitter. I'm not sure how well he will do in high school but I know that when he was in 5th or 6th grade they moved him up to the 8th grade team. And I'm not to sure if Kyle has been moved up because I just met him this year.
Neither of them are anything to special in my opinion. They're both only slightly better then I am and I definetly don't consider myself professional material.

Who are you EdmondsFan? I live in the Bloomington/Normal area and there are plenty of college capable players in the high school ranks, and I've never heard of either of the players you mentioned, and I know a lot of the players around here.

<11 seconds going from home to home>
90 ft. bases? If so this kid is faster then Mickey Mantle or anyone that has played the game. Mantle had one the fastest times to 1st base on a drag bunt and it was something like 3.6 seconds. 4 x 3.6 = 14.4 seconds if you could run straight and not cut the bases.
I Highly recomend that you young guys check out the High School Baseball Web (http://www.hsbaseballweb.com/).
It has some great articles and a decent bulletin board. One of the best articles is the Recruiting Timeline (http://www.hsbaseballweb.com/recruit_timeline.htm)

A good friend of my brothers was noticed at around age 14. Getting full scholarship offers to D1 schools by junior year. I think he is going to Stanford on a full scholarship next year, Jack Mcgeary. Anyone heard of him? I'm hoping to accomplish as much as he has some day.
(He can get drafted out of highschool for a 6 digit signing bonus, or go to Stanford for free.)

When you hit first base, you're already going full blast.
That being said, 11 seconds seems extremely fast. Does anyone have any figures on Major Leaguers going home to home?
EDIT: I timed the only Inside-the-park HR I remember (Mark Kotsay's in the ALDS). It took him 15.75 seconds. He's not a speed demon though, and hasn't completley busting his butt out of the box.

Kotsay is pretty damn fast.. Isn't he around Johnny Damons level in terms of speed? 11 Seconds seems impossible.. Kotsay must have been hustling all the way for an inside the parker, so I would say thats about as fast as he can go.
11 seconds would probably be the fastest in the MLB, or close.

Kotsay must have been hustling all the way for an inside the parker, so I would say thats about as fast as he can go. He wasn't. It was the play where Torrii Hunter dove and missed, and it rolled all the way to the fence. Kotsay left the box thinking he had a single, so he wasn't going all out. Nonetheless, 11 seconds seems extreme for 90 ft. bases.

Even so, Kotsay manages to steal bases year after year. If Edmonds' friend is as fast as he says he is, I wouldn't be surprised if he was drafted and instantly put in the bigs just for a pinch runner that never gets out.

Aww come on, it isn't a little much. Ichiro can get down to first in just under 3 seconds. So you would assume he can round the bases in 12 seconds, however this is just first base. No rounding required, so if you took the rounding into consideration he would take maybe an extra second or two. Edmonds' friend could easily outrun Ichiro if he can round em in 11 seconds.

No, he cant. Fastest ever timed is supposed to be Mantle at 3.1. (Although I've heard of a 2.9 time he once had, dont know if it was true or not)
from a Time article... "After Ichiro puts the ball in play, fielders have to deal with his speed down the line. The Mariners have timed him to first at a Mickey Mantle-like 3.7 seconds"

11 seconds would be world class speed. Bullet Bob Haynes had the world record in the 100 yard dash in track before he played with the Dallas Cowboys. Hayes time was 9.1 and all the way around the bases is a 120 yards. That is going every 10 yards at a .09 clip, .09 x 120 = 10.8 and that is going in a straight line by a world class sprinter.
If that 14 yr. old kid can do 11 seconds around the bases remember the name " Adam Siefer" because your going to be seeing him in the Olympics.

From baseball almanac...
"Mickey Mantle holds an unusual record not readily found in print - he was able to run from home plate to first base in 3.1 seconds which is the fastest time for any player in history"
Also.. "He was clocked at an incredible 2.9 seconds from home to first on a left-handed drag bunt (after his 1951 World Series injury he slowed to a still blazing 3.1 seconds), and could round the bases in and amazing 13 seconds!"

I am Hunter Guthrie. And it's because they are not in high school yet. 8th grade... Both will be going to Normal Community West if you know what high school that is.
Edit: So you go to Normal Community I see... Adam Seifer plays for Parkside and in 6th grade he was sent up to the 8th grade team. And Kyle Vaughn plays for Kingsley. If you haven't heard of them yet you definetly will in a year or two. Maybe a kid called Erik Sipes too.

Well the article said he could throw 90 and hit 400 foot homers with wood bats, how much better does he need to be?
A lot better than batting 7th on his college team. He should have stayed in high schol for his senior year, dominated and signed while he was at peak value. He's risking injury and millions of dollars catching and pitching (high risk positions) for three years of college ball.
Stock wants to be a pro baseball player. Whether it's out of high school or after junior year of college, most players start in the same place, Rookie A ball. So aside from the risk to his arm and his huge signing bonus, he's delaying his progress three years.
