Was in SF a week ago, and went to AT&T Park. On a wall of the park, above the gift shop, is a sign that says "New York and San Francisco Giants" and then lists achievements in both cities.

Congratulations to the Giants for not burying their NY past - as happened to the Dodgers at the hand of the owner who pirated them out of NY.

By the way, AT&T is a gorgeous park. Tastefully done, with statues of McCovey, Mays and Marichal. I took many pictures.

The Giants left under different circumstance. They were having financial problems. They were looking to move to Minneapolis, before Stoneham was hoodwinked into moving to the west coast. Stoneham was very open about his intention to move. Walter O'Malley was busy extorting everything he could from LA.

As a diehard S.F. Giants fan I can say that I absolutely respect and cherish the Giants N.Y. roots. As a kid growing up I read books about John McGraw, Christy Mathewson, Iron Man McGinnity, Mel Ott, Carl Hubbell, Bill Terry, "Laughing" Larry Doyle, etc.

Just think - this upcoming 2007 baseball season will make it 50 years ago - the Giants last season in New York, 1957 (and the Dodgers as well.) Fifty years ago at this time both teams, in spring training, were about to begin their last season in New York.
50 years since they left, and its still an open wound.

The sad thing to me is there is no commemoration of their NY roots this year. I realize this is an anniversary of the leaving by the team but I feel like the teams are ignoring a major milestone.

Of course I suspect next year will be different as they both will celebrate their 50 years in CA.

But just once I would love to see the two teams play each other wearing their 57 gear for one series this year in each others home.

Agree with you. It is sad that there is no commemoration of their NY roots this year. Hopefully they will not make the mistake again next year.
