According to Bill Ladson in his article, Church might go to Philly for Ryan Madson.

I'm sorry to say but I'd do it, Madson is a capable reliever/starter and I can see him in the rotation next season.

Church needs a fresh start elswhere, then again, I wouldn't mind having a Nook/Church platoon in CF?

Moving Church seems like quite a move for a guy who is turning 38 in 2008 and who has ''no long-term MLB experience'', even though I would like to get a Pitcher in return, I would like a more experienced starter...

At this point, Church is so far back in the doghouse with the Nats, it's likely he'll be traded. At the same time, there's not that much of a hurry to move him. Madison looks OK except for that ugly 5.69 ERA. His K/BB ratio is decent; unless they are sure he can work out as a starter, I'd pass. Right now, Bowden needs to be focusing on building a serviceable rotation; we don't have as urgent a need for relievers.

Phillies: Talks of dealing Jon Lieber to Milwaukee for reliever Derrick Turnbow appear to have ended, but Pittsburgh and Texas have expressed interest in acquiring the veteran. Both are awash in relievers. The Phillies are searching for a left-handed-hitting outfielder off the bench, but that will be limited to trades. A possible deal for Washington's Ryan Church died when the Nationals asked for too much.

Unfortunately...

Ah, oh well, as I said, I'd take Madson and another cheap player for Church.
Church is still one of our top declining/ascending prospects and I don't think I can call him a prospect anymore, I see the potential, we all saw it, he just needs to learn to hit a damn breaking ball!

Church is 28; physically, he's about as good as he's going to get. If some team thinks they can make an attitude adjustment, then have at him. I imagine that his trade value has fallen because teams know that the Nats are fed up, and really want to unload him. He might turn around and have a year like Chavez, but that's unlikely to happen if he stays in DC.

What? Niether of those guys will be 38 come 2008. The Phillies were reluctant to trade Ryan Madson for Church. Which by the way, I'm not sure why the Phillies would be interested in this guy right now, beings they have Aaron Rowand in Centerfield, or Shane Victorino, two players who are better than Ryan Church, unless it was to fill the hole that would be left by a trade of Aaron Rowand.

Moving Madson to the starting rotation last year and them moving him back to the bullpen was a terrible move for the Phillies, as evident by his performance when he returned to the pen, but I expect Madson to be back to full relief form in 2007.

Aaron Rowand isn't better than Ryan Church. Except hurting himself running into walls a few times he hasn't done anything.

Hasnt done anything? How about winning a world series? How can a guy who can't keep a job on the last place NL East team be better than someone who's been in the league the last six years and played good those years. Are you basing this on potential or what? I'm honeslty not getting how Church is better than Rowand. Explain, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.

Rowand has been a starter for at least a season and has at least over 30 HRs.

Uh.... he had 1 good year (2004) and has been an extremely average major leaguer for the rest of his career. Church isn't better, but they are pretty close.

Pokey Reese has a ring.

I just see Rowand as pretty overrated. Church can't keep a starting job because he's always in fights with the front office.

Pokey Reese used to be a decent player....Honeslty, going into last season, I may have overrated him, a guy who can hit for power, but after seeing him play for about half the season, the realization set it, he's an average player who's fame comes to him through his hard nosed defense and team play. However, as an overall player, I still feel he is better than Ryan Church.

WHAT!

Is this the Aaron Rowand that the Sox cast away because he declined so badly in hitting?

:dismay: Wow, imagine if we had done this.
