Yeah, we have no young catchers in our farm system that will amount to anything, so a trade is needed (or a good draft next summer). Either that, or find a real 3B and move Inge back (although he is strongly opposed to that). Inge has a fantastic arm, and would certainly be among the league leaders for defensive catchers.

I think that the Tigers would benefit from signing a young, cheap backup catcher. Vance Wilson is good, but is in his 30s. And since Pudge is getting up there in age too, he will need more rest.

A server glitch caused this thread to get a little mixed up. For some reason it moved my reply to the first post of the thread, and says I posted it back in 2002. Oh well, it's back now...

I assumed you just heard this also... Along with left handed Relief, I hear that one of the 2 priorities DD is looking for during this year's winter meeting is prospect C.

No, I didn't hear that.

darn klingons.....or was it sark ?

moving along, we do need a good young catcher, who eventually will make it to the show...starnge,that we don't have any stand out catchers at Erie or Toledo ...For years, Tigers have come up with some decent catchers...

During the Randy Smith era, we supposedly had a surplus of talented young catchers. Luckily for us, we were able to keep the cream of the crop (Brandon Inge) and trade away or release the rest (Javier Cardona, Eric Munson). The one guy that was most recently in our system that had the best MLB potential was Chris Robinson, whom was in the deal that snagged us Sean Casey. He was at least three years away from the bigs, so it wasn't that big of a loss. We need someone before than.

I would not mind watching Inge catch again...I know he would mind, but he was pretty good as a catcher, in his past. And although, stallar 3rd sacker D is nice....his bat needs to plug those swiss cheese sized wholes, to win that gig for the next 5-10, with good behavior. Altough, I think it is in the works, Inge replaces Rodriguez.

If not that Shelton???? lol jk

I'd rather see Inge play third. I like how he plays it. Yes, they should sign a catcher or at least find one in the draft. I think Wilson is a solid backup but they will need someone to take Pudge's place in the near future.

Yeah, we have no young catchers in our farm system that will amount to anything...While he isn't major league caliber yet, I did see Mike Rabelo catch for the Mudhens this summer and he seemed like a decent prospect. Don't sell these triple A guys short. How can you be so sure he'll "never amount to anything" anyway? He was part of Toledo's feared hitting lineup this year. They ended up, by the way, International League champions.
