I was reading Baseball America today at Borders, and they listed the top ten prospects in the Hawiian Winterball League, and three of our Yankees were in there, including the best out of the bunch...all were RHP though (Joba Chamberlin, Ian Kennedy, forget the other guy but it wasn't Clippard) so maybe picking up Zito isn't such a bad idea after all. So it looks like were acquiring a wealth of young pitching. Also Jim Calis said that Humberto Sanchez would be the number three prosepct in either the Tigers or the Yankees organization, which is why he wasn't in our top ten prospects.

Chris, Zito is going to get a 4-5 year deal, big bucks, and take up one spot in our rotation. I feel Zito is the best FA, solid pitcher available and like him but his best years may be in the past (sound familar, a possibility). Is this good? I don't know if Zito is the right fit. If we could sign Zito for 2 years but that's not going to happen. Evans and Tony are going to jump all over me for saying that because I don't want the Willis trade either because what the Marlins want. I am worry that our rotation is fragile, old, not post season caliber, and has questions. I know Hughes (Proctor and Sanchez are questionable starters) is only 20 but I feel he going to be critical this year because Randy and Pavano, and feel he will be in the rotation during the season.

I feel Brian is going with Wang (I want to extend his contract), Moose, Randy, Pravano, Igawa and it's a concern. Wang, Moose, Zito, Randy, and Igawa sounds sounds better.

IMO, Chamberlain will be on the fast track to the majors.

Pending that he performs and stays healthy, he should be in the majors by September 2008.

I`ve made this case before and I think Zito is slightly worse than Kei Igawa. He's going to cost a ton and create a logjam in future years (Giambi anyone?)

I love the systems pitching and I really think and long term deals are a bad idea. We should stick with the team we have with Wang-Mussina-Igawa as a solid and IMO reliable 1-2-3 while maybe Pavano can surprise us (I hear he's working hard to get back) and maybe Johnson can get back to some level of adequacy or if he gets injured maybe Hughes can come up and steal his job.

Well he's only 28, and he's a durable left handed starter, Unit will be gone by next sesaon and we need another lefty, maybe Igawa is that guy but I have my doubts. I'd say overpay him but only deal with his contract for three years.

A log jam? Giambi was a roider who couldn't play defense, and no way Zito will get Giambi money. Also Zito's younger than Giambi, only 28 if we sign him to a four year deal I don't see a 32 year old pitcher creating a "log jam" were going to loose Unit and I still say we need the lefty to replace him.

Signing Zito made perfect sense to the Yankees before the Igawa bid. If we did sign Zito we would have 3 lefties along with Pavano, Moose, Wang, and 1 of our prospects (Hughes, Sanchez, Clippard, etc.) that everybody wants to see. The luxury tax is the only reason why I think the Yanks didn't go after Zito, and instead bid on Matsuzaka and Igawa. I think they might be waiting another year for a big free agent pitcher signing. Next year Johnson will be gone, Moose and Pavano will have 1 year left, and Igawa could be a bust. It still wouldn't be that bad of an idea to sign Zito now but I doubt the Yanks are even thinking about it.

Zito is going to get a lot of money if not 20 million though. I`d guess around 15 million. When we can finally get rid of Johnson (I really hate that deal, I hate it a lot lefty or righty it was dumb) then next year we still have 6 pitchers under contract that can pitch at the MLB level if we don`t trade Pavano in which case we have 5. Their is also Sanchez, Karstens and Clippard who could possibly be ready. One of them is a lefty as well (Igawa). Locking up Zito for 4 years just means he will stunt the development of the guys in the farm.

Who are the 6 pitchers who can pitch at a MLB level?

I count:

Igawa
Wang
Moose
Unit (who will retire by the end of next season)
Pavano (who's contract expires soon and is always hurt)

Who's the other guy?

Also most people had Igawa as a reliever anyways, I really think that the Sox got the good Japanese pitcher and we just got sloppy seconds

Most people don`t have igawa as a reliever. I see him as a 3-4 guy and most have him at 4 a handful at 5 and a few as a reliever. In 2008 we have Igawa, Pavano, Rasner, Hughes, Mussina, Wang. That's 6.
