--Meche probably is better and a better bet for the future, but he stands to make 10 million and get 4 years. I don't really want 4 more years of teasing - especially at 10% or more of our total budget. I assume we are getting Thomson relatively cheap and on a short term deal (I heard 1 year plus an option). As long as he isn't the best pitcher we pick up this year I think this is a decent move.

I agree. This is definitely an upgrade from Piniero at the 4 spot of the rotation. Being from Auburn, Ala., I get to watch Thompson pitch a lot. I've even seen him pitch in person twice. He is a streaky pitcher, but he can be dominate. I think his ERA would have been a lot better if Bobby Cox would have had a better bullpen and gotten him out of games faster. That being said, Thompson should look forward to working with Seattle's pen.

The Mariners are reportedly close to signing Pitcher John Thomson. Thomson, who just turned 33, has had injury problems the last two seasons. He's slightly above league average for his career (103 ERA+), and if he's healthy, he could be a contributor. What's the concensus here at BBF?

I don't know about this. I mean the guy will be turning 33 next season, is apparently very injury prone, has only pitched 200+ innings ONCE in his career, has a 1.390 career WHIP, which ain't helping no one (but the opposing team).

So my question is will be be a reliever (which is the only place I wouldn't necessarily mind seeing him), or a starter? Because if he is meant to be a starter, then we might as well have kept Meche.
