Indications are that the Twins and Rockies are discussing a trade for Colorado righthander Jason Jennings.
The Rocky Mountain News is reporting in today's editions that the Twins are interested in Jennings, who has been a reliable starter for Colorado in recent seasons. Jennings, 28, was 9-13 with a 3.78 ERA for the Rockies this season. Twins General Manager Terry Ryan could not be reached for comment.
The Rockies picked up Jennings' $5.5 million option for 2007, and initial attempts to extend his deal have been unsuccessful. Colorado might move Jennings now before he leaves as a free agent after next season.
Colorado is believed to be looking for young starters and bullpen help. The Twins have a few young starting pitching prospects in righthanders Boof Bonser, Matt Garza and Scott Baker and lefthander Glen Perkins. Bonser is expected to be part of the starting rotation next season, while the other three will have to earn a job in spring training.
Jennings, the 2002 NL Rookie of the Year, is 58-56 with a 4.74 ERA in his career. He has thrown at least 200 innings in two of the past three seasons. He made only 20 starts in 2005 because of a broken finger.
With Brad Radke retiring and Francisco Lirinao out for the 2007 season because of Tommy John surgery, the Twins need a durable starter to line up behind ace Johan Santana.
