Nationals acquire Jermaine Dye from Red Sox.

AP--The Washington Nationals made their first major splash of the offseason, acquiring veteran all-star outfielder Jermaine Dye from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for Canadian-born Jason Bay, who struggled last season in Washington and was the odd man out in the outfield, veteran reliever TJ Tucker (who had Tommy John Surgery two seasons ago and last appeared for a very brief stint with Washington in 2005 before ending his season) and reagular minor-league outfielder callup Mike Vento.

The Nationals agree to pay 9 million dollars of the 18 million in total.

"We are very happy to have Jermaine on our squad for next season, we finished the year on a positive note and hopefully Jermaine will increase our power production in the outfield while mentoring some of our younger players.
We are ectatic to have Dye with us next season and let's wish him the best and a good 2007 season."
wilkerson_rulz-06, Nationals GM

"And on a sidenote, we would like to thank Erik Bedard and his very classy negotiation ways, the deal came easier than we thought it would"

Washington's outfield is crowded next season but most notably, the CF job is up for grabs. The Nationals recently re-signed CF Chris Duffy to a two-year 4 million contract. Duffy did not appear with Washington last season and his season was lost after a mere 6 games in Pittsburgh.

There is also young and prosperous outfielder/infielder Kory Casto to consider.
The Red Sox were rumoured to have had their eye on him but the Nationals wouldn't budge so they settled for Mike Vento instead.

Casto hit .367 last season and unseated Jason Bay late last season and the regular outfielder and performed well, the Nationals like their depth in CF with Duffy and Casto whom they both know are capable young outfielder but they'll have to battle it out in Spring Training.

Trot Nixon, expected to test the free-agent market was re-signed by Washington to a similar contract the Red Sox gave him. Nixon performed consistently last season and hit in the no 2 hole behind hits king Placido Polanco, Nixon is expected to play LF next season and Dye will likely play RF but that can be changed depending on the ST outcome.

*Note, trade pending until meetings over.

Cleveland Indians acquire All-Star Catcher from the Red Sox

http://i.a.cnn.net/si/2005/players/06/21/questions0627/t1_questions.jpg

At a press conference on Thursday, the Cleveland Indians announced that they acquired veteran catcher Jason Varitek from the Boston Red Sox, in return, the Red Sox obtained catcher Ryan Garko and pitcher Adam Miller.

''Jason's acquisition is very important to us, solving an important hole in our lineup, we hope that Jason adapts quickly to our team philosophy and to our pitching staff. We also hope he helps our young pitchers adapt to the big leagues'' commented Cleveland Indians general manager Chuck Ray on the acquisition of Varitek

Varitek will hereby be the starting catcher off the bat, moving former catcher Victor Martinez to an easier position, first base.
Varitek will fill the 6th spot in the lineup behind Travis Hafner and Victor Martinez.

Cleveland's next move might to be filling one of their numerous holes:

''Even though acquiring a very good catcher, we still have numerous holes to fill, notebly our number 5 starting pitcher, our starting left fielder, third baseman, shortstop and second baseman, also attempting to find a ''younger'' solution to the closer's role'' said Cleveland general manger Chuck Ray

*This trade is also pending on the end of winter meetings

Red Sox Acquire Two Top Prospects From Indians

--BOSTON, MA--

Yesterday, the Red Sox finalized a deal to send All-Star catcher Jason Varitek to the Cleveland Indians for catching/first base prospect Ryan Garko and top pitching prospect Adam Miller. GM EB had these comments: "With A.J. [Pierzynski] coming back next year, and V-Tek coming off of knee surgery, we felt we had to deal one of them, and given Varitek's injury, we were more willing to deal him than A.J. We are very happy to have obtained Garko and Miller for him. However, there might not be a spot in the rotation for Miller, with Kip Wells projecting as the ace after an outstanding season, and Gavin Floyd, Chris Smith, Philip Hughes, and Jon Lester taking up the last few spots. We may be forced to deal one or more of our outstanding pitching prospects. Our acquisition of Garko is very good, given his ability to catch as well as play first base. We are altogether very happy with this deal." The Red Sox are also rumored to be shopping Edinson Volquez.

Vernon Wells is off the Astros Block
Adam Dunn has been added - The Astros are looking for a GREAT 3B
Astros have a deal locked in place, pending the end of the GM mettings with the White Sox and the Yankees (2 different deals)
You can do 3 way deals, there has only been one in the history of bbftg (Astros-Nats-Cards, trade deadline 06)

On Tuesday, the Cleveland Indians acquired veteran infidelder Geoff Blum and outfielder Brian Giles for prospects Andy Marte and Adam Miller.
“Brian’s acquisition is very important to us, we filled our need for a power-hitting outfielder with his acquisition and we hope he will mentor our young oufielders” said Cleveland GM Chuck Ray. Giles will fill the number 3 spot in the lineup behind CF Grady Sizemore and DH Jason Michaels.

AP-The San Diego Padres made up for lost time Wednesday making two significant deals. In the first deal, the Padres acquired Andy Marte and prospect Brad Snyder from the Indians in exchange for Brian Giles and Geoff Blum. In addition to getting younger, the trade filled the Padres' gaping hole at third base and made the outfield situation much less crowded.

In a separate deal the Padres sent Chan Ho Park and Vinny Castilla to the Nationals for Taylor Buchholz, Kevin Gryboski, and prospect Tony Blanco. The Padres made their team younger acquiring a mid rotation starter, bullpen depth and a young utility man.

The Padres are still testing the market and plan to make more moves to improve the team through opening day

AP-This was a remarkable deal that was agreed upon after much deliberation from both the Astros and the Braves. Both clubs feel that the deal improves their respective clubs. The Astros got their star 3rd baseman, which fills a big void for them. The Braves get another powerful OF to protect Manny Ramirez. The complete deal entails Hank Blalock, John Thomson, Pete Orr and Joey Eischen for Adam Dunn, Mark Teahen, Scott Rolen, Glendon Rusch, Troy Patton and Enyelbert Soto.

the deal looked big, but Rolen was doing really bad, Teahen wasnt getting anywhere, Pete Orr is a young and good IF, we are looking forward to having him, he is expected to bat 2nd while at AL parks. Then the other players we went, didn't have a future with the astros anyways, and we got to good relivers out of the deal. So overall, the Astros are very happy with this deal. Now they have a really good infield too.
To fill Dunn's void, we have a young guy named Mitch Einerstien who is as good as dunn at hitting if not better, we just never gave him the chance. He will most likely play 1B for the Astros next year, along with Brandon Sing.

Here is what the 07 lineup might look like.

LF - Carl Crawford
SS - Carlos Guillen
3B - Hank Blalock
RF - Wily Mo Pena
1B - Mitch Einerstien
CF - Vernon Wells
2B - Robinson Cano
C - Yadier Molina
Pitcher

then when we play the AL, like I said, guillen would move between Molina and cano, with Pete Orr as the DH batting 2nd.

just to let you know, when we will be able to sign FA's (when ever we can get that set up) Parque will not be on the list to chose from, as he is not in BBFTG. See BBFTG started may 1st 06, and sence then, the only changes in MLB that takes effect in BBFTG, are deaths/retiring of players, (team) name changes, location or ballpark. with Parque, he retired, and in BBFTG, he never came back, while in MLB he is comming back.

bottom line, parque will NOT be on the BBFTG FA list.

exactly, EB, we already went through this, why bring it back.

Same goes with the yankees not having Igawa or the d-rays getting there guy. What happens in MLB (aquiring players) does NOT happen in BBFTG. the ONLY things that we follow, is if there is a team name change, new park, new city, or a death of a player.

In a blockbuster deal between the Houston Astros and New York Yankees, AJ Burnett will be heading to the Big Apple. The deal will also send RP Chad Qualls and catching prospect Humberto Quintero in return for young SP Scott Kazmir, C Humberto Cota, SP prospect Abel Gomez and SS prospect Joaquin Arias. The Astros also agreed to pay for 2 million of Burnetts contract until Burnett reaches a new agreement with New York or until the contract expires.

Astros GM was shocked at the determination from NYY GM to get not AJ Burnett, but RP Chad Qualls who had a mediocre ERA of 5.23 ERA in 82 innings of relief. The Yankees passed up what seeme dlike a better feal originally offered to receive Qualls. The Astros however, also seemed hesitant to deal Qualls. In a later interview with the Yankees GM the media asked him why he went so aggresivly at Qualls he responded with "We have our reasons." Only time will tell whether the Yankees gamble on Qualls will pay off.

*I wernt sure if we were supposed to write stories or not, so I wrote that one. Hope its all good!

Strong Crop of College Players Headline 2007 BBFTG Draft

A very strong crop of college pitchers headlined the BBFTG draft which took place from March 16-March 28 on baseball-fever.com. Six out of the top eight players selected played NCAA ball. With the first overall pick, Luke Hochevar out of the University of Tennessee was taken by the Milwaukee Brewers. One scout said of Hochevar, “He has a very good fastball and is as close to major-league ready as anyone in the draft”. Andrew Miller, who after leading his North Carolina Tar Heels to the finals of the College World Series was expected to go as high as #1, was happily taken by the Cubs with the seventh pick. After learning of his destination, Miller said “Even though I’m surprised that I didn’t go a little higher, I’m thrilled to be pitching for such a storied franchise as the Cubs”.

Another surprising drop was Tim Lincecum, who was taken by the Orioles with the eleventh pick. Even though he is only 5-11, Lincecum blew away hitters at Washington setting the Pac-10 record for strikeouts. One first round surprise was Wes Hodges, a 3rd baseman out of Georgia Tech, who was taken with the 25th overall pick by the St. Louis Cardinals. Cardinals GM Gashouse6 said he took Hodges because “We needed a 3rd baseman and Wes seemed like a great all-around player”.

The draft also featured many guys with strong bloodlines in baseball. Kyle Drabek, the son of former MLB pitcher Doug Drabek was taken with the 20th pick by the Minnesota Twins. Chad Tracy, son of Dodgers and Pirates manager Jim Tracy was taken with the 30th pick by the New York Mets. Cory Rasmus, the brother of Cardinals prospect Cody Rasmus was taken with the 40th pick by the Toronto Blue Jays. However, perhaps the most prolific relative taken was Preston Mattingly, son of former Yankee great Don Mattingly. Mattingly, a shortstop out of Evansville Central HS in Evansville, IN, was taken with the 33rd pick by the Detroit Tigers. Jeff Samardzija, who gained national attention as Brady Quinn’s number one receiver with Notre Dame, was selected with the 47th pick by the Los Angeles Dodgers. It is expected that Samardzija will give up his football career in order to pursue one in baseball, which he considers his passion.
