The first televised baseball game may have occurred in Japan. Researcher Bob Timmermann brought my attention to the fact that the Japanese were experimenting with prototypes of television by the early 1930s. One of the sites was Waseda University in Tokyo, and on February 17, 1931, an attempt was made there to televise a baseball game. If the game was indeed visible, it was seen only a laboratory.

Brian, I think you just knocked the snot out of one of my favorite trivia questions.

(It's not the first time that's happened here.)

I know. I was shocked when I read it. Just got volume 2 of A Game of Inches - has a lot of good stuff.

The Japanese leagues could change many established beliefs.

Too bad the country that supposedly pioneered the televising of baseball seemingly has saved so little. I remained absolutely amazed that seemingly no one has footage of a complete game with Sadaharu Oh. Not even the game where he hit HR #756.

Just wondering because it's not out there - how much does MLB actually have prior to say 1980? or 1970?
