Interesting that there isn't much activity in this thread.

Congrats to Morneau, but I think the writers picked the wrong Minnesota Twin.

Congrats to Morneau.

I'm curious, there's been lots of debate in the CE thread about whether or not Morneau was the most valuable player on his own team. The other names mentioned were Mauer, Santana and to some extent, Hunter.

Was Justin Morneau the MVP of the 2006 Minnesota Twins?

I'd concur.
I'm actually baffled as to why Mauer didn't get it, if a Twin was meant to be the MVP.

Edit: Well, I read this post in CE: http://baseball-fever.com/showpost.php?p=741461&postcount=78

I always think it's smart to listen to those who watch a team day in and day out, but I'm still unsure.

You got a point SoxFan...to realize the impact of Morneau was to watch him everyday like Twins fans have...But quick now...who is the Twins MVP?....Mauer, I am sure would have been the answer most often. So, Morneau over Mauer...and that is just on the team level let alone the league level.

So, as a Red Sox fan, I got to watch the expoits of Ortiz all year, and there just couldn't have been anyone that did what he did...just couldn't have been....it seemed like everyday, every night...opposing pitchers would still pitch to him after the 8th inning. The "he's a DH" excuse is lame...its a position, and with the exception of Pujous, Ortiz "played" his position better that anyone in the MLs.

And I like Morneau, heard he was humble, appreicative and a nice guy. So chalk another mistake to the writers. The contributors to this forum know more than them collectively. My scan on the comments reads that way too.

I don't know that I've heard the manager, coaches or players show support for either Morneau, Mauer or Santana as the MVP, but the only reason non-Twins fans think of Mauer as MVP is because of all the publicity he received. Don't get me wrong, Mauer deserved the publicity...he's arguably the most coveted player in baseball (a 23 year old catcher that can hit and play incredible defense), I just ask that you aren't fooled by what you hear on ESPN and other sports networks. To truly appreciate what Morneau did, you had to watch the Twins more than 10 times last year (which I would bet that no non-Twins fan did).

To work off your top two paragraphs above, last year, while all of us were arguing the Big Papi verses ARod debate, Red Sox players and coaches came out saying that Varitek was the team's MVP. This supports why I don't like the argument "well, he wasn't even the team's MVP". I love Ortiz and hated to see the Twins let him go and I would argue that he drew the short straw last year and again this year...he is the most feared hitter in baseball...PERIOD. Having said that, he did not deserve the AL MVP this year, but it was also unfair to rule him out just because the team faded down the stretch.

I still think papi should be the M.V.P.

Not the way the BoSox took a tailspin should he be MVP, a far bigger problem than being a DH. I don't think that's unfair. MVP is about contributions toward winning, and teams that cease winning when it matters the most don't really have much to contribute by way of candidates toward that.
It's very easy to dismiss someone by just looking at the stat line when there are so many examples where the voters were looking beyond the stat line. Like this one. What Colorado Express summed up so nicely is something I can definitely buy.

That's exactly my way of thinking on the subject. As a Sox fan, I hated my own opinion this past season, but I can't see how a team that clearly falls out of contention could carry an MVP. That doesn't seem logical.

Would it be hijacking since people had a problem Monreau's numbers didn't back up his selection over certain other players? Though, I agree with Captain Cold Nose's view as well.

Personally, the MVP more about numbers. If it was about numbers, there simply won't be a point of voting. The player with the best statistical numbers, would be the MVP, or, the Best Player.

Monreau might have got hot at the right time, but I think he was the spark that the Twins need to get back on the role they did. I also believe that players would know who the MVP of their own team would be before the fans, not knocking the fans, but some of us tend to over-analyze and also vastly make a huge deal about the "numbers".

i love watching morneau play the game...but it baffles me as to how a guy who looks that uncomfertable swining the bat and playing the field can do so well... congrats to one heck of a player

however, i do believe that derek jeter should have won the mvp, because he is a much more rounded player...better d, better base runner....pretty close to equal hitter. just my choice on that one
