I will be coaching a group of 7-8 year olds this spring and wanted some practice ideas to keep the kids interested and moving the whole time. Also, what are a couple of good little drills that highlight correct swing fundamentals. Keep in mind these are little guys, can't get too deep or make them think too much.
Setting up stations for multiple drills is valuable.
You can check out my Drills Page (http://www.youthbaseballcoaching.com/drills.html) for some ideas.
Keep them busy... the worst thing you can do is let them get bored.
The most boring drill in basball is team batting practice.... 1 guy hits, the coach pitches and the rest of the team sits around being bored!

Great stuff Cong. I have an exceptional group of kids this year and I really want to try and keep it fresh. I think we lose alot of young kids in baseball due to the downtime in practice that we have all seen. I saved your site to my favorites list and will print off all drills when we I have time.

I agree with Cong, multiple stations are best. I also due a drill where I fill the field with players at each position with remaining players donning helmets and standing near the left hand batters box readying to run. I talk with my players about scenarios and out counts and have them feedback to me what they will do if they get the ball or it goes away from them. I am the only batter. I then hit the ball (toss up style) and the runner takess off at the sound of the hit ball. If they make it to first, we then go over the new scenario and also take input from the runner on what they are to do. I do this so I can control the location of the ball and can see if they really know what to do or are just "parroting" back my information. Makes for a live game situation and involves everyone. My teams ususally number usually 12-14. We get training for both sides of the ball.

A good place to ask would be the coaching 101 forum here on baseball fever. There are several guys on there that would be more than willing to help you. I know for a fact that Jake Patterson has written a book on coaching youth baseball and that he sends out copies to new coaches. I'd try your luck there also.

hey there, i found a great website that's got a lot of info on youth baseball coaching tips, www.teachyourkidbaseball.com. There are sections working with a variety of different kinds of kids (the klutz, the natural athlete, the lefty, etc) and tips on training the batter, pitchers, and fielders. I've found some really helpful tips and ideas in here that I've been able to take back to my team that I coach. Enjoy and good luck!
