Bonilla may have been overrated, but man could that guy slug in his early years. While Groat drove in just a little more than 700 guys, you can't argue with his 2100 hits, his .286 lifetime average, and his SA average of .366 is quite impressive.

I think you mean, "His SA of .366 is quite unimpressive.

Bobby Bonilla and Dick Groat? I have never heard a "Bobby Bonilla for the Hall" movement and I live in NY...Bonilla played only two more full seasons in PIT than NY.

A .366 SA is not "quite impressive" by any standard. It was below league-average for Groat's time. It was probably a little above average for an NL shortstop of the time. Solid, but not impressive.

Groat was a fine player, but might have been better at basketball. He was National Player of the Year at Duke in 1951.

Both guys had WRAP3's in the 80's. The means a good career, but don't get too excited. I's take Groat just because he was an SS and played in Pitt a couple years longer.

Maybe they could play it out on the basketball court, although I have zero idea how well Bonilla could play hoops. It might as well have been a thousand years ago, but Groat was in the NBA and a great college hoops star in his day.

Purely as Pirate, I'd have to give it to Groat for his comparative longevity with the team, as well as playing a huge role in helping to lead them to a World Championship in 1960.
