I guess I'll start early and pick SP Phil Niekro.

leecemark
11-09-2006, 07:50 PM
--That would have been my choice too. Are you going to make him a bonus baby and put the franchise tag on?

leecemark
11-09-2006, 07:57 PM
--Max, I've PMed you a couple trade offers and not heard back. Even if they don't interest you at all, I'd appreciate a reply.

The Pirates, with the 2nd pick of the 1964 rookie draft are pleased to announce that they choose Starting Pitcher: Luis Tiant.

The front office had this to say: "We are happy to have the opportunity to work with such a talented athlete. We feel that despite his young age, 23 years old, he can be an immediate asset to this team, and help us down the road for many years to come."

leecemark
11-09-2006, 08:37 PM

Can I get back to you on that or do I have to let you know now?

--You can get back to me. You'll have to decide before we get to the free agent bidding.

Erik Bedard
11-10-2006, 04:59 AM
If I can go, I'll take TONY CONIGLIARO.

A reach, but he helps a lot right away.

leecemark
11-10-2006, 06:02 AM
--I think its safe to say he won't be getting the franchise tag. Nice to be able to see the future with that one. He is definately the biggest immediate impact player though.

mac195
11-10-2006, 06:07 AM
I forget, what are the rules about rookies who don't play much in their first couple seasons? Bill Singer, for instance. Would he not become a free agent until 1973?

leecemark
11-10-2006, 06:10 AM
--Everyone drafted this year will be a free agent after 1969. Dropping the provisions for starting the clock later was part of the deal when we adopted the hometown discount rule.

leecemark
11-10-2006, 06:11 AM
--The Knights have acquired minor league 3B Don Wert from the Shoeless Joes for a third rounder in this draft and a second rounder in 1968.

Trade between the Knights and Shoeless is confirmed.

I was hoping Conigliaro would last until pick 6...bummer!

Lew, I'll send the draft list in a few hours (Thanks!).

Hey, I was hoping he would last until pick 12.

--I've got the Gamblers proxy. They select pitcher Mel Stottlemyre.

Erik Bedard
11-10-2006, 01:35 PM
Not a chance. I've got a very potent middle of the order with him, Wagner, and Callison.

Erik Bedard
11-10-2006, 01:36 PM
Aw, Stottlemyre was my second pick available. And it'll be a miracle if my first choice available lasts to my next pick.

leecemark
11-10-2006, 01:37 PM
--The Knights select pitcher Sonny Siebert. This was a tough call. I had been planning to take a pitcher from the time I first got this pick and scouted the draft, but Tony Perez sliding down had me rethinking the issue. I had him rated as the best position player in the draft and I may regret sticking to the plan when he is a 30 HR a year 3b in the late 60s. Siebert helps NOW though and my rotation would be in trouble next season without adding a quality starter. Sonny is pretty good through all 6 years under control (and beyond) so Perez can slip a little further to some lucky owner.

Erik Bedard
11-10-2006, 01:40 PM
Yep, I had a tough choice between Tony C and Perez, but Tony C helps more immediately (and him being among my all-time favorites didn't hurt either :p). I can't wait to see what he'll do in the friendly confines of Wrigley.

leecemark
11-10-2006, 01:43 PM
--I think they aren't quite as friendly as Fenway. Conigliaro does give you 4 good years right out the gate, but your outfield was pretty strong for this year already. Davis makes a pretty pricey 4th outfielder.

Edgartohof
11-10-2006, 01:44 PM
Just figured I'd get back to you, but I am not putting the franchise tage on Tiant.

jkc32
11-10-2006, 01:56 PM
The Shoeless Joe's select Tony Perez. I would have preferred Siebert or Stottlemyer but Perez will fit nicely in a couple of seasons.

Lew, did you get my draft list?

Erik Bedard
11-10-2006, 02:00 PM
--I think they aren't quite as friendly as Fenway. Conigliaro does give you 4 good years right out the gate, but your outfield was pretty strong for this year already. Davis makes a pretty pricey 4th outfielder.

True, true. I'm open to dealing any one of my OFs, except Callison and Conigliaro. Preferably, I'd deal Davis, Harper, and Covington, or just throw Harper in the minors until he's relly ready, and only deal Covington or Davis.

leecemark
11-10-2006, 02:00 PM
--Perez is a super value with the 6th pick, I hated passing him up. Maybe we can do some business, Joe.

jkc32
11-10-2006, 02:09 PM
Would be tough to deal him, especially since I'm targeting his good seasons for a decent run at the title. But, I'd certainly listen to any offers.

Erik Bedard
11-10-2006, 02:18 PM
Check your PMs.

catcher24
11-10-2006, 04:14 PM
Yes, Joe, I got your list. I sent you a PM, but to let everyone else know (and explain why I held things up a bit) I had to go to a doctor in Erie today and just got back (6 PM EST). I was just ready to make the Perez jpick for Joe, but in reading the posts I see he has done that. So, that brings things down to my pick. No doubt in my mind over this one. If Perez had still been available, that would have made the choice somewhat more difficult. Since Perez was taken by Joe, that still leaves (a bit surprisingly to me) the player I had ranked fourth on my list. And Mark will know who this pick is without even looking!

The Legends select outfielder:

JIM NORTHRUP

Erik Bedard
11-10-2006, 05:12 PM
Northrup was high on my list as well. Just not as high as Conigliaro. I had him fifth, after Tiant, Niekro, Conigliaro, and Perez.

catcher24
11-10-2006, 05:23 PM
To be honest, Tony C. wasn't on my list at all. A great talent for the next four years, but the time frame didn't work for my team. Certainly was a good pick for you, though, Dan, although in that position I probably would've gone with Perez.

leecemark
11-10-2006, 05:28 PM

11-10-2006, 05:55 PM
Good pickup for you, Mark. Gilliam bounces back with a pretty decent year in 65. And Stafford can help Max this year, as well as in 65. Not a big trade, but decent for both sides.

Glad to get Campy-I wasn't expecting to get him with my pick, but of course Scott not being here helped a bit with that (sorry Scott!)

catcher24
11-10-2006, 06:32 PM
Mark - Scott not being here has presented a small problem. I presume his two slots will still be one 750K salary (#8) and one 500K salary (#9), while the Pirates pick will be the last of the 500K players, with everyone else coming in at 250K. Is that the way you figure it as well?

leecemark
11-10-2006, 06:32 PM
--I don't want to let the Redbirds slip too far in the draft. I asked Mac to fill in, since he has no picks though 3 rounds, but he has to leave. If no one has any objections I will make Scott's picks at the end of this round and if he doesn't like my players he can throw them back and take someone else when he checks in.

Well, I don't want to be selfish, but I don't think I should have to pay more because Scott isn't here. I got a better player because of that, which is an benefit but it still isn't really fair to make me pay more for him. I'm not going to be abrasive about it, but that's just what I think would be fair.

leecemark

--We're only talking about 1/4 of 1 % of the budget so it shouldn't be a big deal either way. However, the rules state the first 4 players are 1M, the next 4 are 750K and the next 4 after that are 500K. Campaneris went 8th, which would be 750K.

Mark, not to create any headaches for you, but I tend to agree with Chris. If you hit Chris 750K for Campy, we're assuming Scott would've taken him with one of his two picks, but we don't know that for sure. Since Scott has Zoilo Versailles at SS, I think it unlikely he would've used either of those picks for another SS.

I select P Rick Wise.

leecemark
11-10-2006, 08:07 PM
--Aker has some really nice seasons (but also some really bad ones:ughh ). Boswell doesn't peak very high, but has 3 seasons where he is a solid starter. Parker's bat is a little weak for a firstbaseman, but combined with his gold glove defense he would be a passable starter in 3-4 seasons (although I'd rather have him off the bench in all but one).
--I have been looking toward this draft since the beginning and it has paid off better than I expected. In 1969 3 of my 5 starting pitchers, my starting firstbaseman and a solid reliever will all be from this draft - and I hope to get at least one more contributor in the 3rd round. There are actually are still some pretty good ballplayers left. Several of whom I had rated above a number of players already selected.

leecemark
11-10-2006, 08:10 PM
I select P Rick Wise.

--Nice pick. He is a solid starter for 2-3 years before hitting free agency and worth hanging onto after that if you can. Thats all you can ask of a third rounder.

catcher24
11-10-2006, 08:12 PM
I had Dierker on my list just because of his 69 season, although he has a couple other respectable ones as well. Aker has that monster 66 season, and a decent one in 69. And of course Siebert has decent seasons all the way through, with excellent seasons in 65 and 67. And as you mention, Boswell doesn't have any Cy Young seasons, but he's very dependable all the way through the six years. Parker's bat is a bit weak at 1B, but he was on my list as well. Switch hitter, and could also play the OF decently.

catcher24
11-10-2006, 08:15 PM
Yes, nice pick in Wise. You'll get the "hometown discount" after the 69 season if you want to keep him as he enters his best stretch of seasons on the mound.

How many rounds are in the rookie draft?

catcher24
11-10-2006, 08:28 PM
We basically keep picking until everyone passes. We usually do the first three rounds live, then use the eight hour window for the rest. Those that don't want anyone else can just pass; actually, I think Mark has them post that they pass for the rest of their picks once they're done, so anyone who still wants some players can keep picking.

BOBBY KNOOP

leecemark
11-10-2006, 08:45 PM
--Knoop I think is the steal of the draft. I was prepared to make him a first round pick before trading for Dick Green (Knoop is better, but Green only cost me a third rounder). Bobby Knoop doesn't hit at all this year, but contributes EX defense. The next 4 years he posts OPS+ over 90 with that same good defense. At a thin posiiton that makes him very valuable. If only I'd known he'd last this long...

catcher24
11-10-2006, 08:49 PM
I was VERY surprised he lasted until this late in the third round. I wasn't concerned about a secondbaseman until two days ago, but I think he's far superior to Helms, and that was about it for this draft. I'm not real excited about that 67 OPS+ for 1964, but he has a great glove, and then doesn't produce too badly for a secondbaseman the next four years. Then he drops off the cliff again in 69, so I'll have to do something before then!

catcher24
11-10-2006, 08:51 PM
Very nice pick on Cater, Robert. I was going to take him, but I needed a secondbaseman. He has OPS+ over 100 four of the next six years, and plays 1B, 3B and the OF. A really handy utilityman, if nothing else.

catcher24
11-10-2006, 08:53 PM

--I think Blair was a good value in the middle of the second round. Your slip in the first round hurt but, McCool was by far the best LH reliever (and one of the best overall) and Carroll the best long term reliever. They should have some trade value if relief is not what you wanted (I'd be willing to give up a future pick for Carroll). I saw this draft as only 7-8 players deep in actual first round talent, so unless you saw something I didn't the vlaues from late first round all the way into the early third were pretty close. You get a couple good years, either early or late. Carroll and Blair are both guys worth using the hometown discount on to keep into the 70s so maybe you come out with a decent crop.
