Here are some tough choices. again do you value pitching or hitting or baserunning or ???

Tough indeed. Chould've been a multiple choice. But, gun to my head, had to go with Mays.

I guess this is just another poll on "Mantle versus Mays"
But boring if I allowed two choices!

My thought is that by allowing more than one (just here), it would've made more room for the occasional Mathewson, Musial, McCovey, etc., votes. The Mantle/Mays race could be closer, and in this particular pack, a spectacular player such as Mathewson will receive sadly little support.

My 2¢ :)

How is Musial out of the race? I've got him #1, followed by Mays.

Why is this next to Maddux?

(20+ seasons)

I think someone wanted old Greg to get some votes :D

Mickey Mantle here.

I can't believe Mo Vaughn wasn't on there...

Wow....odd poll. Here is my dumb "euphmism for butt" trying to think of Tiger greats that should be brought up (to be fair, I think Eddie Mathews played out the string, with the Tigers, and hey after checking I was right). My head is mostly empty though, except for Matt Nokes and Warren Morris

Mel Ott should be on the list though, and I guess for that I will vote for other.

Is it me of does Dan Quisenberry have a lock on the best player that began with Q? Ok, Jack Quinn was pretty good 247-218 with a 3.29 ERA...still that one is all DAN.

BTW sorry, Jack Morris my brain fart left you off.

Ott starts with the letter O. ;) ...But I tend to think the letter will eventually warrant a vote (even though Ott is probably the obvious choice).

This one is a bit tough, since Quinn was so durable. I would probably vote for Quisenberry, but it's still tough. ...However, my guess is that a "Q" vote is probably unnecessary.

Here is where I got confused, not a hard thing to do with me....Your poll says last name M....and your first post says, name that begins with M.....hence Mel Ott

Nice observation. Mel Ott works then :D

I'm pretty certain, given the poll options, that the idea is that the players' last name begins with the letter. Granted, it might have been written a bit clearer, but... look at the options. *shrug*

But okay, let's just say -- for hypothetical argument sake, mind you -- that Ott would be an option in this poll. Do you really think Ott was a better player overall than Mays, Mantle, Mathewson, Musial, et al?

C'mon.

I don't think Bid McPhee and Joe Morgan are worthy to be in the same breath either.

Mel Ott is far more deserving to be on this list than Bid McPhee!

Now there, I'd have to disagree.

Howso? The stats speak for themselves pretty much.

Because Ott is part of a different poll.

Besides, I believe that at least Mays, Mantle, and Mathewson were better players. jmo

Sorry for the confusion.
Milladrive is right: in my mind, "Last name begins with the letter __" and "Name begins with ___" both mean the same thing. Someone might choose to start a similar poll based on first names, but I made this poll based on LAST NAMES.

When we identify MLB players by just one name, we usually choose to use his LAST name:
Aaron, Bonds, Cobb, DiMaggio, etc.

Until recently, I would have voted for Mays, but as I learn and hear more about Mantle, I have to believe that I may have underrated him. Mantle gets my vote.
