Yesterday, November 2, 2006, former 1949 Browns infielder John Paul Sullivan celebrated birthday # 86. Our apologies for being a day late and a dollar short in offering old John this heartfelt salute of congratulations. Born 11/02/20 in Chicago, Sullivan is the 18th oldest of 61 living former Browns on this date in 2006.

Not this guy. Our Sullivan was no
"really big show" in the big leagues.

Former MLB infielder John Paul Sullivan's six season career consisted of five seasons with the Washington Senators (1942-44, 1947-48) and a final year with the St. Louis Browns (1949). As a slugger, John Paul wasn't exactly the model for Bernard Malamud's Roy Hobbs in his landmark novel, "The Natural." In 1,833 official times at bat, Sullivan belted only 1 HR while hitting for a career batting average of .230 ad a slugging average of .270. John Paul became a Brown on 10/05/48 when the Senators traded Sullivan and pitcher Tom Ferrick, plus that ever-popular $ 25,000 in cash, to St. Louis in exchange for infielder Sam Dente. In 105 games and 243 official times at bat for the '49 Browns, Sullivan batted true to form, hitting .226 with 0 homers. That's OK, John. - Reaching age 86 (in good health, hopefully) is bigger than a Grand Slam any day!
