I hope this is the right place to put this. Sorry if it isn't.
I am going ahead and trying to plan my our roadtrip next summer. I have a few hotels that are in our price range and would like to ask for comments about hem if anyone knows. What we are looking for basically is a safe place to park our car and rest our tired heads. I don't need a 4 star hotel, just a place to feel safe and that is relatively clean. Also, we don't care if the hotel is real close to the stadium we are visiting as we like to drive around a find things to do. We like to just head out a see what we can find.
With that said, here are the hotels that have peaked my interest so far:
In Cincinnati:
Quality Hotel & Suites Central
4747 Montgomery Road
Norwood, OH 45212
LaQuinta Inn & Suites Cincinnati
350 Meijer Drive
Florence, KY 41092
LaQuinta Inn Cincinnati North
12150 Springfield Pike

And in Detroit:

Plymouth MI 48170
Barley Inn
34952 Woodward Avenue
Birmingham, MI 48009
Days Inn Downtown Detroit
3250 E Jefferson Avenue
Detroit, MI 48207
Fairfield Inn by Marriot Detroit Auburn Hills
1294 N Opdyke Road
Auburn Hills, MI 48326
Hilton Inn Southfield

Karen,
All of those places are decent while in Cincinnati.
Florence, Y'all, is about 20 minutes or so south of the Stadium. Lots to do on the other side of the river, with Covington and Newport, a few miles to the north and side by side and in plain view from GAB, full of stuff. Newport-by-the-Levee is full of fun for the whole family, and you can walk across a couple of the large bridges that span the Ohio River, avoiding parking in downtown Cincy.
La Quinta North is right around I-275, 15 minutes or so north of GAB. Lots of shopping in the area, with two major malls a few miles in either direction. Just north of the hotel on the same road is an incredible grocery store called Jungle Jim's. It's not your father's IGA.
Norwood is a little south. Not overly familiar with that part, although I do believe it's near the zoo and Xavier University.
All safe.
Same with the Michigan hotels. Birmingham is pretty upscale, lots of great restaurants up and around Woodward, which gives you a direct, non-highway route to Comerica. Driving down Woodward from the Northern Suburbs to downtown Detroit is an experience, to say the least.
Auburn Hills is growing very fast. There is a mega mall, and all that goes with it, there.
Plymouth is pretty decent. There's often a lot of construction between Plymouth and Detroit. Same with Livonia. Lots of shopping and restaurants in both cities.
If I'm not mistaken, The Hilton Southfield is right at the beginning, (or the end) of the Lodge Freeway, another conduit between the suburbs and Detroit. Never had a bad experience with the Hilton hotel family. Southfield has plenty of nice stuff.
Staying on Jefferson, a very busy downtown street that leads to some bad areas in part, is probably your most avoidable option.

You get to see the good and not so good in one short drive. It's a clear picture of the city.

You might be better off in several ways staying in Windsor Ontario rather than in Detroit. Hotels along the riverfront in Windsor can be bought for as little as $60 a night on www.priceline.com. Put in for a three star hotel, and the Hilton and the Radisson are both available. Street crime is not a problem in Windsor. There's a pretty nice tourist area downtown, Italian restaurants on Erie Street, and a pretty walkway along the river, giving you the chance to take pictures of Detroit.
It's about a three mile drive to Comerica Park from downtown Windsor, via the tunnel. This compares to 15 miles for Birmingham and about 25 for Auburn Hills. Be sure to bring photo ID for the border crossings.

I stayed at the Holiday Inn in covington,KY last year. It's right across the river from GABP.They have shuttle bus service to the ballpark on game days.Otherwise,it's about a 5 minute drive to the ballpark.

Does it take along time to get across the border? I have bad memories of sitting in a car for nearly 2 hours trying to get across the Mexican border in San Diego. :crazy

It may take about half an hour if traffic moves smoothly. Likely less.

It's still a bit worse on the Bluewater Bridge, between Port Huron and Sarnia.

Is the Milner Hotel still in downtown Cincinnati, a couple blocks north of Fountain Square? Stayed there when Pete got his hit. Like a SE Asian hostel, it had 'character'. Sold some memorabilia and stayed with the visiting teams in the Hilton the next couple years. Outside of Cincy I've stayed in a forgotten place in Covington, a Red Roof Inn off of I-75 a couple of times, and my Uncle's house just outside of Dayton. I'd recommend the Hilton. If you're under 21, you can hang in the lobby for autographs, give enthusiastic shouts of encouragement to the players as they leave in the elevator, then walk to the ballpark for batting practice. If you're over 21, you can have the mini bar and all the afternoon TV you want, walk to the park for the first pitch, and when you encounter the players after the game you can ask 'em if their officially listed height and weight is with or without the jewelry.
As for Detroit? Too close to home for hotels, though surprisingly far the few times I woke up in my car. Some call it 'Rock City', y'know, but I've never known anything about that.

For people coming to visit Detroit...the downtown area is safe, and there are some great hotel options within walking distance of the ballpark.
Hilton Garden on Gratiot is about 2 blocks from the park. Its only about 3 years old, and is in a vibrant, safe part of the city.
The Mariott at the Ren Cen is also nice and you can hop on the People Mover directly from the hotel. It will take you within 2 blocks of the stadium.
The Courtyard at Marriot is also a great option...directly across from the Ren Cen.
By 2008, there will be 3 Hotel Casinos (about 400 rooms each) ready to go...The MGM Grand being the first to be completed.

I would definitely not stay in Norwood. It might be closer to downtown than the others, but it is not really in what I would call a "great" area. I lived near there for the last five years. You might want to consider staying further out of the city (Florence would be a good bet).

The Norwood area is not dangerous. It definately has its share of characters, but its a safe area. Also, its right along both 71 and 75 and you can get dowtown in around 5-10 minutes. However, the hotel you listed, the Quality Inn, doesnt look appealing from the outside. I have never stayed there, but i bet its a run of the mill budget stay. Depending on the price (if its a good deal) then it may be worth a look. I think most visitors from this area, stay in northern kentucky, sadly, because its easy to get into Cincy and there is more to do on the river over there.

I can comment on both of these....
First Detroit: Caught a Tigers game last Sept and stayed at the Milner. It is literally right next to the stadium. Great if you want to have a couple drinks and walk to the park. Dont have to worry about parking, there was a garage across from the hotel that was $5 for a day (and over night). The hotel is old, but the folks there were great. You get breakfast. The rooms are nothing special, but for the price and locations it was exceptional. Also, i get bored of staying at the same old "chain" hotels time after time. I think there is a Hilton Garden Inn, a few blocks away from there if that is more your taste.
Second, Cincy, i live here so i dont really know what hotel to recommend. One thing i can say is traffic here is much easier than most cities, so commuting on the highway should be relatively painless. Staying along 71 would be advisable, its better than 75. i know there is a new hotel right on 75 near the norwood lateral exit, its the 1st exit south of there and the name escapes me now. I think the hotel is a holiday inn express but not sure on that either.

I always stay at the Holiday Inn in Covington. However I am coming to RedsFest in December and I am staying at the Courtyard in Covington which is basically across the Ohio from Paul Brown Stadium. You can catch the shuttle across the river for $1.00.

There are some beautiful old grand hotels within site of Comerica in Detroit. It's a shame that they're all boarded up and rotting away. I thought they were supposed to renovate a few of them for the Superbowl a couple of years ago. Guess that didn't happen :dismay:
