Yankee Legend

I did this last year so I figured i should do this again. To vote, simple list the top 10 catchers that are active in order from best (#1) to least (#10). The results will be tabulated and will be announced on Nov 7 @ 9 PM or 2 days after the last ballot was submitted. The points will be alloted based on the player's ranking on each list (1st place gets 10, 2nd gets 9, 3rd gets 8, etc.) Remember, YOU MUST LIST 10!!!!!
Although you may vote for whomever you see fit try to rate players in either performance in the 2006 mlb season or performance in the last 3-4 years. However, you may can use career performance as a factor.

1.) Joe Mauer, not quite at his offensive potential (still developing power) but his defense pushes him up to 1
2.) Brian McCann, probably had the best offensive year for all catchers but is only average defensively
The Rest
3.) Victor Martinez
4.) Jorge Posada
5.) Kenji Johjima
6.) Michael Barrett
7.) Ivan Rodriguez

Piazza is a hitter who happens to play catcher (and a poor one defensively), only because he's even a worse liability anywhere else in the field. He should have spent his entire career in the American League as a DH.

Never been a fan of his. Pretty batting average, lefty, and some power but he drops out of my top 10 because of his ridiculously low on-base percentage and below-average defense. Kinda makes me happy to have a legitimate reason to keep him out because A.) He's a White Sock and B.) he's more trouble than he's worth.

how do you call McCann average offensively? I'm ok with ya ragging on pierzynski but mccann is good.

that was a typo, I meant defensively. I like McCann a lot, above average pop, good plate discipline, good contact, good patience, etc...
I'd be sad to see him leave Atlanta, which is very much a possibility with Salty projected to be up relatively soon. Speculation has it that the Braves upper management have never really been thrilled with McCann's performance behind the plate and that he was just a stopgap until Salty matured. I don't really think they expected him to be the best statistical catcher in the NL.
I'm thinkin they might do the same thing as they did to Estrada, use him until they have a suitable replacement and trade him when his value is high. Salty better be everything that they say he is.

He hits in an insane line up. It's easy to get overlooked when you're the fifth or sixth best position player on your own team.

I'm agree mostly with Astro's ranking, only differing on certain place for certain players. I'm surrprised people are ranking Martinez that high. Even with his offense, his defense make him one of the worst defensive catcher around.

Wow is Posada underrated on these lists. #9 on one, not even on another. He's improved his defense to the point where he is above average and was the third best offensive catcher in the majors last year. And he has a track record to back it up. How can people put Pudge, who can't even post a league average OBP and is a year removed from an OBP of .290, and guys like Lo Duca ahead of Posada is amazing.

My thinking is that he's a good fit at #4. McCann and Mauer had great years and their offense can easily justify the #1 and 2 slots. The closer debate was between Posada and Martinez for the #3 and 4 slot. They're pretty similar in terms of offense statistically . I looked at the last 3 years (not just this year) and Martinez has a slight edge. Posada had a better year but the three year stats favor Martinez. Posada has an advantage defensively but I thought Martinez's offensive numbers gave him the 3 spot.
but hey, he's on there

Right about that. Roberto Hernandez is a long tenured relief pitcher. My mistake.

surprised Yadier Molina didn't get more votes. As bad as he is offensively, he has a laser.....he's also been clutch the past 2 posteasons.....

Looking back from previous polls, I find it outrageous people think Posada is so much better than Hernandez.
