Here is a 1912 Washington Senator. Who is he? None other than Chick Gandil who later
served as the ring leader of the 1919 Black Sox! (Chicago Daily News photo)

Yep he was in Washington then although I think he made his debut in Chicago in 1910 but it was in fact in D.C. that he met Joseph "Sport" Sullivan, a bookie and a key figure in the 1919 Black Sox scandal.

Griffith completely revamped nearly the whole team after buying into the club in December 1911. He talked team president Noyes into ponying up $12K in late May for Gandil, a heavy-hitting 1B with the Montreal Royals of the International League. Coincidentally, the Nationals soon went on a 17-game winning streak which shot them from 6th place to 2nd. Griffith arrived in D.C. and quickly gave the city its first bang in years.
