I really miss the expos... I'm sure I don't miss em as much as some people on this board being a jays fan and all, but without the expos there has been no natural rival. Sure the tigers are playing well and them and the Indians were our rivals from yesteryear, but MLB's unbalanced schedule has really ruined those rivalries. The Yankees and Jays had some excellent games together this year, but I couldn't help but think that it would have been more beneficial if the Expos were in the AL. Imagine playing games against Toronto, Boston, New York, Detroit etc. It would have been more fun in my opinion.
I think Montreal is a great city, and with the population it kind of annoys me that the city only has 1 major professional team. I think it has to be blatant prejudices about the market or just lack of support. I'm not a hockey fan (Baseball, and basketball are my thing), so generally the lack of pro teams in Markets that could support em tends to annoy me. I am talking basically about Montreal, and Vancouver in specific.
What if that Strike never happened? The Blue Jays vs Expos maybe? Who knows. For a long time after the strike baseball never really recovered in this city either. Sure it wasn't nearly as bad as the expos demise, but it was obviously a big hit. The buzz is really starting to come back here and baseball I believe is heading in the right direction overall, but it really feels different to me without the expos. No longer do I see "Montreal" in the box scores of the Toronto Star and it saddens me sometimes. I also really root for any team that faces the Nationals, and when that team's highlights come on one of the many sports channels I flip the channel.
Anyways, I am not like many of those people who say "Never." Right now it's way to early to predict Montreal ever getting a team again and it would be ludicrous. I think the Toronto teams doing well ultimately should spark interests throughout this country in the other sports and maybe some corporations/millionaires will have their light switches turned on. Considering our economy now and the strength of the dollar, pro sports works better now than it has in the past. I hope to see Montreal get a team in the future, but even I am not naive enough to think that there isn't going to be hurdles.
Anyways, if you guys ever need another team to root for I hope you choose to root for the Jays. There is always room for good fans. :gt
