View Full Version : Time to buy a Giants Cap... but which one?

Ok, Which Giant Cap to buy? It's time for me to get one.

I am going to go top of the line (Cooperstown Ballcap Co.) who make a stunning product. I already shelled out the $44 dollars (yes, $44... each) for a 1944 St. Louis Browns Home Model (complete with NO logo on the front of the hat, just the stripes down each seam - beautiful) and a 70's Model Cardinals Cap, with a slightly different STL than you are used to seeing.

The company truly makes "the Worlds finest ballcaps" (as it reads on every tag ), complete with a real leather hatband that is so comfortable, well.....if I had the means I would buy the company like the Hair Club for Men Guy who was so freaking impressed he purchased the business!! :D

Anyhow, I could not go wrong with the classic black and orange number from the 50's but SO many of ther earlier blue and white models, even a red and white model from one year (1930) have caught my eye. Or do I go with the black and orange from 1933, which has a slightly fatter NY than the 50's models? I love the 1936 and the 1940, but they are awfully close to a Mets hat... something us Cardinals fans can't wear, regardless of the NLCS this year. Some have pinstripes.... plenty from McGraw's era, and even a few from when the Polo Grounds was made out of WOOD.

A whopping TWENTY NINE New York Giants hats from yesteryear can be found at www.ballcap.com

Use the search box to the far right, top of the page, and search "GIANTS" Scroll down past the other Giants teams to the NY section and enjoy.

The company makes so many different models, that they cannot use photos for their hats, but don't let that fool you, they make the best, and make them to order, 100% by hand.

Aplogies if this is against the rules or anything (promoting an outside company, if indirectly even) but where else can you get 29 different Giants Hats!!

If you order, order one size bigger than you need. I wear a 7 3/8, but wear a 7 1/2 from them. If yours does not fit, no worries, send it back and they make a new size at no charge and ship it for free!!

Does Donald own them all?

I have three NY Giants caps from Cooperstown Cap Company (I at one point had 11 from all teams...now only ten due to the fact that someone, whose skull I will pound in if I ever see them, stole my 1910 St. Louis Browns cap). The first is a 1953 NY Giants cap which was, incidentally, the first Cooperstown Cap I ever bought. The second was a 1904 NY Giants cap (I'm almost positive it's 1904...the kind with the black cap, but white bill...also not sure if this was home or away). Third was a 1932 New York Giants cap. I actually like the last one the best, but it's awfully close with regards to the '53 cap. Incidentally, I also have a 1947 New York Cubans cap from CCC. Pretty close to the period Giants cap, but has a yellow bill and logo (they switched to red the next year).

While you're at it, can you grab me a 1946 Red Sox cap? ;)

Ironically, I got one of those! I loved wearing it to high school two years ago. Man, did I get dirty looks (Mets fans were okay with it, tho')! I also have the '35 Braves cap, which I also wore that year, and still ticked off the Yankee fans with ("but they're the Braves and I'm a Mets fan!").

Dalkowski....

How are the OLD, (pre WW II) caps... the ones with the SHORT bills? I am afraid I would look like a complete idiot in one of these caps, or at least look like I am wearing #1 a kids cap, or #2 just beat up a kid and took his cap.

On the other hand, if I would be wearing a Ty Cobb model, I would just be paying homage to the horses behind that he was!! He would certainly beat up kids if the situation called for it!! :D

Some of the Brooklyn hats are very nice as well.... not truly being a Giants fan so to speak (more of a Polo Grounds nut) I could perhaps end up with a Blue cap....

Have to check out the Cubans.

They're pretty nice, actually. Even my "cheese-box" 1904 Giants cap is really nice, comfortable to wear. I don't look like an idiot in one, even my g/f doesn't think so. ;) My favorite actually isn't a NY cap, but my 1933 NL All Stars cap. I get tons of questions about "Hey, isn't that an umpire's hat?" But for some reason I just like it a lot. My favorite was the 1910 Browns cap until it was stolen. Not only did Rhody Wallace wear one, but it looked really cool.

[QUOTE=StanTheMan]Ok, Which Giant Cap to buy? It's time for me to get one.

When I visited the Hall in Cooperstown I bought the 1941 model specifically because it reminded me of a Mets cap. In addition, Hubbell's cap on display in the Hall (of the same period) had faded so that the red outline of the "NY" looked orange. Or maybe I just wanted it to look orange...

I've always wanted to buy a cap from those guys at Cooperstown Ball Cap but was afraid getting something I couldn't wear (size wise) or return. Definitely will be purchasing a cap soon. Thanks!

IMO the 1977 Pirates pill box cap is awesome.

Every time I see it I'm reminded of Dave Parker puffing a smoke in the dugout with his eyes blood shot.

I can just imagine him doing the hot knives the night before.

The first two I ever bought were too small. Just return them... and they remake the hat for free and send them for free.

I think I did pay the postage for my return, though. A Couple bucks, no big deal.

The logo for the 1946 Red Sox cap - how is it? It looks rather weird on the website...I was wondering how it actually looks in real life. If it looks fairly authentic, I'm thinking of buying one.

Thanks!

Oh, sorry, I never checked this back.

It looks fine on my '46 BoSox hat! Some of the catalog drawings are a little crude, and the caps themselves, if you find real pictures (and I believe you can, just can't remember where), look much better.

Two Things....

I would venture guess that EVERYTHING they do is as authentic as it gets..... I had my 1944 Browns Hat on in St. Louis a few weeks ago (was there for Game 4 and Game 5 of the World Series) and I was stopped by an old timer in the lobby of a Hotel a few blocks from New Busch. He wanted to see it. He eyed it, and looked at the stitching, the stripes (which are actually a thin orange stripe sewn onto a thicker brown one), the leather headband. His mouth was wide open. He then said "I had one of these once...." like he was an ex-player or something. The guy must have been 80+ It was a very odd conversation.

I also posted previously to get one size bigger... well, the Cardinals World Series Cap I bought at Game 4 is a 7 1/2... just like I get from Cooperstown Ballcap. So maybe their sizes are right on, and my head is now bigger than a few years back? :D

That reminds me of my '53 Giants cap. My Dad demanded to know why I had just bought an ORIGINAL cap when there are so many "good quality" repros around! He was shocked at it being a new ballcap.

I got a '40 Giants cap from Cooperstown..the kind my grandfather would've remembered best. Awaiting it anxiously..I cannot believe a site like that exists, especially for a guy with a big noggin like me.

I don't understand why the Cooperstown cap company doesn't take real pictures of every cap they make and put it on their website. I'm a little suspicious - are they worried customers will complain if their Brooklyn Dodger cap doesn't look exactly like the picture?

I wonder if it has to do with them using the trademarks of the logos...that's probably why they don't have pictures of the logos.

If you are following the thread on the Dodger board, the B logo looks pretty good.

I'm waiting on a couple old Giants caps, anxiously, and I'll put them up as soon as I get them.

Thanks!

I have a replica 1946 Red Sox cap manufactured by Mitchell and Ness ten years ago. They're not available anymore. It matches PERFECTLY with the ones the club wore at the time (and up to the early '50s), with the slightly oversized sewn on patch red letter B over a tad larger white one. Cooperstown will give you an embroidered version. Still nice-but it looks like I stole the one I have from Bobby Doerr's locker.

I don't know if cooperstown collection makes warm up sweaters, but it would be neat if they made 1904 NY Giants warm up sweaters to go along with the cap. Does it look like this Christy Mathewson cap circa 1904:

Urban Outfitters (belying my age here) are selling some old 1911 New York Giant replica caps from American Needle for dirt cheap - $9.99. Real soft wool and a sewn in logo. Not as good as Cooperstown Ball Cap Co. but a steal for the price.

Not this one (http://www.mickeysplace.com/york-giants-1925-olboy-cooperstown-collection-p-2545.html), is it? I might have to go pick up a couple.

The San Francisco one has 1910's Detroit, 1919 Cincy and the 1930 Red Sox. Your mileage may vary depending on where you are - I went to one in Boston a few weeks ago and they just had Red Sox ones.

I'll see if I can find one. I might get you a 7 3/4ths if they don't have it - I have a 7 5/8ths and the fit can be a little snug.
