I was reading the 19th centeury player's bio's thread and thought it might be nice to read some newspaper accounts of the Excelsior Club Baseball Tour that started in July 1860.

This account is from the game played on July 19, 1860 against the Atlantic Club. It is the first of the tour is was able to find.

I wonder how today's players would do only using Runs Made and Outs Made as their stats? I found it interesting that the 1B picked off a R1 in game one, and numerous fly balls (skyrockets) to the outfield were actually caught. Batters "tipped out", meaning they fouled out to the catcher I guess.

The Atlantics came back to defeat the Excelsiors on their home turf. Creighton tired in the 7th inning and was replaced after giving up a lot of runs. The paper reported he was not in condition...didn't he die that same year during a game?

Thanks for placing these writeups on BF!
