"BUCK O'NEIL MEMORIAL SERVICES
Municipal Auditorium Will Be the Site of a Public Celebration of Buck's Life at 5 p.m. Oct. 14
KANSAS CITY, Mo., October 9, 2006
The Negro Leagues Baseball Museum (NLBM) announced today that a public memorial service for John "Buck" O'Neil will be held Saturday, Oct. 14 at 5 p.m., at Municipal Auditorium, 201 W. 13th St., in downtown Kansas City.
All of Buck's fans are invited to join the NLBM in celebrating Buck and honoring his life at this free ceremony. Doors to Municipal Auditorium will be opened at 4 p.m., with the 90-minute program scheduled to start at 5 p.m.
Scheduled speakers at this time include: Cincinnati Reds' Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan, who will serve as host of the ceremonies; author Ken Burns, whose PBS documentary on baseball brought national prominence to Buck; and St. Louis Cardinals' Hall of Fame outfielder Lou Brock, who was discovered by Buck. There also will be music and video tributes, along with other speakers, who will be announced later.
Buck passed away last Friday, Oct. 6, from complications of congestive heart failure and recently diagnosed bone marrow cancer.
Buck's fans also will be able to pay their respects on Friday, Oct. 13, from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m., when Buck will lie in repose on the Coors Field of Legends at the NLBM, America's Home of Negro Leagues Baseball in the historic 18th & Vine District of Kansas City.
Per Buck's request, in lieu of flowers and other gifts, all of those who love Buck are asked to contribute to the "Thanks a Million, Buck" campaign that is raising funds for the expansion of the NLBM and construction of the Buck O'Neil Education and Research Center.
Tax-deductible contributions can be made through the NLBM Web site at www.nlbm.com. Checks can be made out to the Negro Leagues Baseball Museum and mailed to 1616 E. 18th Street, Kansas City, MO, 64108. In addition, contributions can be made by phone toll-free at 888 221-6526.
The Buck O'Neil Education and Research Center will be part of an expansion of the NLBM to be built at the historic Paseo YMCA, the birthplace of the Negro Leagues. The NLBM's goal is to raise $15 million to renovate and expand the Paseo YMCA. The money will fund the construction, renovation, exhibits, and an operating endowment. Incorporating the latest in interactive technology and state-of-the-art research equipment, the expanded NLBM and Buck O'Neil Education and Research Center will allow visitors, students, researchers, and baseball fans to study every aspect of the Negro Leagues."
I also would like to encourage all of you to send a message to the HoF about the gross injustice they turned a blind eye to in regards to O'Neil's non-selection to the HoF by the Negro League Committee.
