Who is this guy, and why is he the go to guy about pitching? I checked him out, and it said he only pitched for like a week in the majors..

That's a week longer than 99.8% of baseball players get to play in the majors buddy :laugh .
He is the Go-To guy about pitching because he is a pitching guru, why do you judge people by how long they have spent in the majors? His son is in the majors though, or was drafted to the minors, i'm not sure.

Because, if I was seeking pitching advice, I would find the guy who pitched 10 years and won a cy young, not the guy who spent a week in the majors and did OK..

Charger, you are doing the right thing - check the person's credentials before you move ahead with their recommendations. Check Dick out at http://www.pitching.com/
Bare in mind that just because someone pitched 10 years in the Majors it doesn't necessarily make them good teachers. And sometimes - experience does matter. I have talked with Dick via Email and found him to provide good advice, others might disagree...

But why didn't this guy do so well in the majors if he is such a pitching genius?

There is an old saying that kind of goes like this: "There are those that can do, but can't teach, and those that can teach, but can't do."

You are confusing ablitly to teach with ability to pitch..they are two different things...
In order to teach, one must have the ability to communicate, organize, evaluate, adjust to the student, have a million different skills which do not involve themselves throwing a baseball.
Rudy Jaramillo is the hottest hitting instructor in the MLB. He never played
in the big leagues. It makes no difference.

Athletic ability has little to do with teaching ability, although the former does help the latter.
"The measure of a good coach is not how well he knows the game it's how well he can teach it."

Because, if I was seeking pitching advice, I would find the guy who pitched 10 years and won a cy young, not the guy who spent a week in the majors and did OK..So you'd rather get pitching advice from Dwight Gooden instead of somebody like Dave Duncan who never pitched in the majors but has been a succesful pitching coach for years?
