Ok since our catcher has failed to show up for our team for the whole season, I decided I would catch. I've been a catcher before, but now am a pitcher. The pitcher I was catching for was throwing pretty hard (83-85), and he never threw towards my glove, just really high sometimes and lots of times, low, directly at my toes. I told him to slow down a bit and try to be a little more accurate, than speed, but then he got mad so I stop talking. Since he kept throwing at my toes, and finally broke my toenail, I just quit catching. Just curious, am I the one having trouble catching? If you're wondering, we lost the game, everyone was walked, and some got a couple runs. (we end the inning at 6 runs so it doesn't last so long).

Well, your pitcher is an idiot for not wanting to slow it down. Another case of a pitcher throwing his arm off, but not locating anything. He won't last long if he continues pitching like this. I mean this in a sense of attitude. But the physical sense applies as well.

But you should also be able to block the balls if they are heading at your toes. How did you break one? I'm curious, because normally you would block it if it was that low.

Where's your coach?

well have you ever tried to catch a ball right at the tip of your toes? (basically touching the ground right at the tip of your toes). Anyways, he kept throwing there and I move out of the way, because if I don't they just bounce up and hit me in the face. The toenail broke, because I didn't move away fast enough, and it hit it directly. My toenail is bruised and busted. Before this, he'd already hit my shoulder and hands, because I wasn't ready yet. So I guess you can also say I was a little agitated.

As for the coach, he kinda laughed, because the pitcher said "what do you want me to do, throw like we're playing softball, because you just can't catch?":o

Shouldn't be trying to catch the pitch you are describing. You should be blocking it. If you need to use your helmet to block it as it bounces, then you use your helmet.

The only problem with this is, it gets annoying after while from getting hit even with the helmet on. Note: the ball isnt going slow.

Well there is not much you can do if he isn't going to slow down the pitches. Maybe knock his face in? Cruel, but it's an idea.

Billybob622,

For a catcher to be successfull he has to like getting hit, almost want it,

You wrote that you use to catch, but lately you have been pitching. My question is why did you stop catching before??

Your advice sounds correct.

It sounds like your pitcher was rushing; trying to throw too hard with his body and screwing up his timing.

In terms of catching balls down there, you have to trap them (between the ground and the glove) more than catch them.

Yes, yes I have. You either trap it on the ground, scoop it (palm facing the pitcher), or block it. I happen to be a catcher myself.

Since you aren't a full time catcher, I will refrain from going any further.

well as far as scooping it....I think thats not a good idea, but trapping it or blocking it is the only thing I would do now, when I catch, for other pitchers that throw low like that. Note: I'm not catching for this guy again.

Oh, and I quit catching, because it started to make my knees and back get stiff and hurt all the time.
