I'm still upset by the total lack of support for Markakis. Behind Johjima? What? Whoever gave Johjima those points is obviously a Seattle homer who pays no attention to stats. Markakis has a 19-point OBP lead, they have equal BA's, Johjima has a three-point SLG% lead, two more HRs, but that's it. The big one for me is Markakis' FIFTY-ONE POINT RC/27 lead. FIFTY-ONE. That anybody voted for Johjima over Markakis is upsetting.
Johjima is a catcher -- Markakis is a corner outfielder -- The production from Johjima is worth more than that from Markakis. I'd vote Johjima over Markakis, and i'm not a Seattle homer.

Johjima had 22 Win Shares this season. Markakis had 13. It's not even all that close.

Of course, I'd be among the crowd who think Ichiro should be stripped of his ROY because he played under a major-league contract in another country. But my reasons for that would get into politics, so I'm not going to discuss this further. All I'm going to say is that, by matter of principle, Markakis is more qualified than Johjima.
And also, TFAM, Win Shares are a pretty skewed stat, from what little I know of them. They tend to overrate catchers, especially defense-wise. Offensively, if Johjima has a lead, it's almost always by a very small margin. Markakis has a FIFTY-ONE point lead in RC/27. And Markakis is a very good defensive right fielder, though there really isn't any way to measure pure speed and defensive skill (especially in the outfield). Anyway, it all comes down to which team you like better.
It's a 9 point difference, does it really matter? Markakis isn't a well-known player. I know Markakis, but I didn't even know he was a rookie.
It's at the bottom of the list, and it probably comes down to a few Mariner's fans who threw Johjima in because they knew of him. It's the market he plays in.
Why do you think Mourneau came in third here (by a lot of votes to boot)?
PS: What's RC/27?
Nine points is more than the difference between Dan Uggla and Ryan Zimmerman. Nine points is a pretty big difference. But what I'm most concerned about the three next to Markakis. That means only three people voted for him at most. And no, I wasn't one of them. I didn't submit a ballot at all, and if I did, I would have voted for Verlander. But hey, it's my mission to get Bedard and Markakis some visibility on this board, because they deserve it.
RC/27 is supposed to be a measure of how many runs a team made up of nine of that player would produce.

.
I can understand your problem with WS, but only at total WS. If we look at only offensive WS, position isn't a factor. With that said, Johjima has 14.6 offensive winshares, Markakis has 10.6.

Hey fellow Baseball Fever members,
Thanks to each and every one of you for making this another fantastic year at Baseball Fever!!! As has become a tradition here over the past three seasons, I will be accepting ballots once again via private message or email in an attempt to conduct an awards vote in a similar fashion as does the BBWAA. The points system will be the same as used in the official MLB ballots. Your ballots will not be revealed to anyone other than myself unless you wish to make them public. Ballots that are listed publicly will not be counted unless they are also accompanied by a PM or email to me containing the information as well.
For MVP please submit your top 10 choices for each league in order. A first place vote will receive 14 points, 2nd place 9 points, 3rd 8 points, etc. down to 1 point for a tenth place vote.
For Cy Young, ROY, and Manager of the Year please submit your top 3 choices for each league in order. A first place vote will receive 5 points, followed by 3 for a second place vote, and 1 for a third place vote.
Accomplishments in the post season should not be weighed in your voting decision.
After an ample time is given to vote, we will tally up the choices and see how we did in comparison to the Baseball Writers. Remember please vote for those players you feel deserve these honors and not necessarily the players that you think will win them. Remember, your vote counts!!! Thanks and happy voting.
If you care to view the results from last year, they may be seen here:

Don't know if we're supposed to post in here, but I don't see why not.
Voting was toughest for the NL MVP (tough to fill the bottom half of the ballot), and the AL manager of the year (after Leyland, does it really matter?).
When can we expect the results?

I'm sure I mixed up a little bit, and I probably forgot a deserving vote or two, but this is what I submitted to The Commish as my official BBF vote. The easiest vote for me to make was Jim Leyland for AL Manager of the Year. Sure, I'm a homer, but I'm positive he'll win this catagory in a landslide. The toughest call to make was for NL MVP. I went with Carlos Beltran over Albert Pujols, mainly because the Mets were a much stronger team than the Cardinals, plus he was a fantasy stud for me this season after I picked him up on the cheap. I reward my players, yes. lol

I sumbitted mine today.
The toughest call for me was NY Cy Young. No one stood out, and there where a bunch of people that looked very similar. Very tough to separate the pack

Now, now ... it is perfectly reasonable to have Verlander ahead of Santana on your AL CYA ballot. After all, Verlander bested Santana in the all-important Shutouts category, 1-0.
In fact, I'm considering changing my ballot to list Jake Westbrook first, since he had TWO shutouts. :crazy

Putting Verlander ahead of Santana, on the other hand...
Yeah, Leyland will win that vote without me having to give him the extra homer points. That one is a no-brainer. The AL Cy Young vote was tougher, but I gave the nod to my hometown kid because Verlander outdueled Santana in a classic 1-0 game earlier this season (Tigers back-up catcher Vance Wilson plated the only run, a solo shot off of Santana late in the game), and they're stats aren't that far apart. I know Verlander doesn't stand a chance to win that catagory, but I figured I'd give him a few extra points and hopefully he can place in the top three when all is said and done.
My biggest act of homerism is Carlos Guillen for MVP. I see that a few others think he's worthy of a top-10 spot, which is acceptable to me. He doesn't have the greatest numbers, but his value to his team is tremendous. I think if Guillen spends a lot of time on the DL this season, the White Sox take the wild card and the Tigers hope for next year. Also, perhaps putting Kenny Rogers third in Cy Young balloting is a bit extreme, but I wasn't the only one to include The Gambler on their list.
HOMER!!!!!!!
Yes, I'm an admitted homer, and it can get silly sometimes. But not as silly as having Jim Leyland THIRD in AL Manager of the Year balloting. :crazy ;)

I guess games are won by character and media attention, not by putting runs on the board and preventing them on the field.
I stand corrected.
I guess the guy who led the world in homers and RBIs and led virtually EVERY offensive category since the AS break is nothing more than character and media-friendly.
It's nice the have lowly baseball wanna-be fans envious of someone in Philly for once.

I suspect there will be a large amount of invalid ballots...
Even the REAL ballots are valid if they only pick one player in a category. It's not mandatory to select 10 MVP candidates in each league. Besides, what's the point of voting a guy 10th in MVP? Who cares after two or three...

I agree with nearly everything you picked, but I can't believe you picked A-Rod for 3rd in the voting and Jeter 8th. I don't want to sound like a Jeter homer, but how can you possibly rank A-Rod as more valuable to the Yankees this year than Jeter.

I didn't really base these on "value", it's pretty much based only on stats and their team's final standings. Also factored into this situation is the fact that I don't like Jeter and I do like Alex.

If you want to measure the validity of fans voting for ANYTHING, just count all the people having Ryan Howard 4th and 5th in the NL MVP voting. That's a joke and just the reason the All Star game voting should be returned to the players.
In the All-Star game fans vote for the players THEY WANT TO SEE. So what if they're not technically 'the best'. It's just one game in which the players always claim they are there to 'have fun'.

Yea, well, now the idiot commissioner has found a way to impact the World Series by the outcome of the axhibition game, the knowledgable fans sending who they want to see isn't a very good idea, now is it? Back in the day, when the players took that game very seriously AND the players selected their deserving peers, it seemed to work just fine thank you.

But baseball is about drawing fans, too, and so sometimes you have to accept less than perfection to increase interest. So the All Star game has a miniscule effect on the World Series (is there any stats showing that home-field advantage affects the outcome? Most WS don't even go seven games)? Whoop-de-do. Fans cheering and booing while a pitcher is in his windup has an effect, too. Maybe we should outlaw that. After all, they don't allow it in golf and tennis.

And likely still 90+ wins (all the Yanks needed to win that division). Which is also the reason Polanco gets a vote, he did go down and the Tigers scuffled. Michael Young gets a vote for that all star triple, giving the AL homefield. Oh and he had a pretty good year too.

Yes. The home field advantage is larger in the WS than any other "statistical advantage" either team may hold, including W-L record, ERA, etc. UNLESS the home team is the Braves in the '90s.
Home field advantage is huge in the WS. It is not miniscule.
Think about it: when were the last times that the team with home field advantage LOST the WS? It happened in 2003, 1999, 1992, 1984 and 1981. So since 1980, the team with home field advantage has won the WS 20 times, and lost 5 times.
Now, how about W-L record? Well, the team with the better W-L record, since 1980, has won the WS 10 times, and lost 15 times. Does that make sense to you? It does, if you figure that the team with the lesser W-L record had home field advantage in all but three cases: the 1992 Braves, the 1999 Braves, and the 2003 Yanks ... those are the only WS since 1980 in which the better team had home field advantage and still lost.
HFA is simply the dominant determining factor in the WS. It has been so since about 1985. Before that, there was a stretch when the home team lost the WS ... it was almost the rule in the '70s, and the team with the better W-L record won most of the time. For some reason, around 1985, it simply stopped happening and the home team started winning almost all the time no matter who had the better W-L record.

I agree about The Doc. However, I disagree with you saying that the Jays were mediocre this year. They (like several other teams in the AL) would have made the playoffs had they been in the NL. They had a better record than St. Louis, and they played the Yankees and Boston 18 times each this season.
I agree with what you say about Halladay. But disagree with your judgement of the Blue Jays.

Well, they aren't in the NL, and the game is different in the NL, so you don't really know how they would have done. They weren't a mediocre team, but they were not a very good team either.

Okay, so I stand corrected. However, it should be pointed out that a team used to get home field advantage simply because it was their league's turn, so these days only about half of the time does the outcome of the All Star game affect who gets home field.

I think we're waiting for the Japanese series to end, for all the official awards to be announced and for the Cubs to win the WS. Right after that.

I was unaware that this was an issue of such pressing urgency or I would have hired PricewaterhouseCoopers to tabulate the results.

The balloting has officially ended. I will be posting the results as soon as I am able to total them up.

What's the point of voting if you can't sit up late and watch the clickers (you have to be OLD — Walter Cronkite old — to know what that refers to) tally the votes?

The totals are in and have been officially tallied. The number of first place votes are in parentheses (where applicable) followed by the number of total points.

Great Job Commish. It seems like a really tight race in many places this year. I can't believe Santana wasn't unanimous. The NL ROY and CY Young Races were exciting and it's one of the few times where MY vote mattered lol. Seems like we had great races all over, can't wait for next year.

Well, at least Pujols can hold the MVP BBF award over Ryan Howards' head. Ha see you didn't make the playoffs, that's why I won. It should be noted that Ryan Howards' team had a better regular season record then the Cards.....whatever thats worth. But Howard could of went to that, had he been as classless as Pujols, over the BBWAA awarding of Howard MVP.

I can understand your problem with WS, but only at total WS. If we look at only offensive WS, position isn't a factor. With that said, Johjima has 14.6 offensive winshares, Markakis has 10.6.
And since I don't know the WS formula off the top of my head, I'm struggling to see where that difference comes from. From glancing over their stats, I don't see any where Johjima has a big lead, and a few where Markakis does.

Does it have anything to do with positions played? Jojima, of course, is a catcher, and Markakis an outfielder. Jojima's line is great for a rookie catcher, while Markakis' line is just good for a rookie outfielder. So maybe the offensive win shares thing is adjusted for comparisons to other people at their position.

Johjima is a catcher -- Markakis is a corner outfielder -- The production from Johjima is worth more than that from Markakis. I'd vote Johjima over Markakis, and i'm not a Seattle homer.
I agree, and im not a seattle fan either, plus you also have factor in safe-co field is murder on righties, ask richie sexson how many homers he's lost over two years.

BTW i KNEW YOU WOULD BE SO PRESUMTIOUS TO THINK I MEANT REGULAR TEAM,AND YOU WALKED INTO THE MOUSE TRAP ONCE AGAIN.Hows the cheese taste with that clamp slamed on ya???
I don't think that he was being presumptuous at all. Anyone would assume that you meant regular team. I could say that Jeter and Manny have played on the same team, but I don't think that anyone would agree with me.
As to the debate on Ichiro, I agree that he should not have been eligible for the ROY. He wasn't a first year player in professional baseball, therefore he shouldn't have been able to win it. In no way am I suggesting that they strip him of the honour, but they should ammend it so that it doesn't happen again (for possible example, with Matsuzaka this season).

YOUR FUTILE ARGUMENT NOW IS THAT TORRE'S BASEBALL OPINION IS NOT VALID BECAUSE HE DOES NOT HAVE ENOUGH EXPERIENCE!!!!!!?????!!!!!!!WATCHING THEM BOTH??????Now your saying he didn't play with Ichiro,THAT is your only point?????yOUR CLINGING TO THAT BRANCH TO SAY TORRE'S OPINION SHOULDNT EVEN BE CONSIDERED????
He never said that Torre's opinion shouldn't be considered.
Everyone is entitled to their opinion. EB is allowed to think that Clemente was better than Ichiro, but that doesn't mean that he doesn't consider Torre's opinion as well. I think that Ichiro is a great player, but since I never saw Clemente, I can't really say.
You can make comparaisons with Carew and Lofton (although I think Lofton was better on the basepaths than Ichiro) based on stats. Comparing players defenses with stats is tougher to do, because stats don't tell the whole story when it comes to defense. So unless you've seen Ichiro and Clemente both play, it's tough to say.

PS: I'm not trying to insult you, but it would really help if you didn't type in CAPS so much, and used proper punctuation. I find it difficult to read your posts, and find myself having to read over them a few times to make sure I understand what you're saying. Maybe use Bold instead of CAPS.
