DURHAM, N.C. -- University of Washington right-hander Tim Lincecum won the Golden Spikes Award Friday as the top player in amateur baseball.
Lincecum, the 10th overall draft pick by San Francisco, won the Pac-10 Pitcher of the Year award for the second time in his career after going 12-4 with a 1.94 ERA and a Division I-leading 199 strikeouts.
He is Washington's career leader in wins (30), innings (342) and strikeouts (491).
"Tim's tremendous season and magnificent career show he belongs in the impressive company of the players who have previously won the award," USA Baseball executive director Paul Seiler said.
Bob Horner of Arizona State won the first Golden Spikes Award in 1978.
Other previous winners include: Rickie Weeks, Khalil Greene, Mark Prior, Pat Burrell, J.D. Drew, Mark Kotsay, Jason Varitek, Robin Ventura, Jim Abbott and Will Clark. Nebraska's Alex Gordon won the award last year.
