What do you do with him next season, do you have him close or keep him as the eight inning guy?

I heard a stat by someone who called into XM radio. Previous to this year, Kyle Farnsworth held the single season record for number of pitches reaching 100mph at 18. This season, Joel Zumaya had 212 ptches that reached 100mph. Can anyone verify this? Too bad they didn't have the ability to measure pitch by pitch speeds during Walter Johnson's tenure.

I see Joel Zumaya being a Setup Man again next year. I am positive he will be a closer later in his career but last time I have heard Tigers did not put him in the closer role because he is young and just got to the MLB so they do not think he could handle the pressure.

well it all depends what kind of spring he has, and how the current closer
does as well..I suspect Zumaya is a season or two away from the closer
role..unless Leyland moves him into the starting rotation....

Hmmm, actually, not a bad point, somewhat...I would think that spring training would shake the tree out,in regards to how the club will use Joel..add to the mix, guys like Miller, and if they make the club, and how Leyland will use them..either as set ups, potential closers, or as starters..I suspect Joel will do another season as a 8 inning guy..but anything can happen..especially if the injury jinx rears it's ugly head..

welcome to the forum, Mr.Snitch..

If he can accurately throw to 3B and keep from getting injured, I don't care how they use him as long as they keep him.

I just hope sometime around June of 2007, while the Wings are still in the mix of the playoffs, they do not have Joel throw some octopi as hard as he can, for some kind of radio promotion.

Don't say it can happen, cause it did....rumor has it thats how Matt Anderson lost his arm.

I can see it now. Maybe we should put some odds on that happening eh? I bet JZ would turn around and throw with his left hand.

I found this in the "Rumors" section of FOXSports.com. It's pretty funny, and good news (kind of):

The Tigers are satisfied they won't see a recurrence of the right wrist and forearm inflammation that sidelined Joel Zumaya for three games of the American League Championship Series. Why? Club president and general manager Dave Dombrowski told WXYT-AM (1270) on Wednesday the team had concluded Zumaya's injury resulted from playing a video game, not from his powerful throwing motion, according to the Detroit Free Press.

"That was probably what was taking place," Dombrowski later told the Free Press.

Zumaya, 22, was known to play "Guitar Hero," a PlayStation 2 game in which a player uses a guitar-shaped controller to simulate the performance of popular songs.

During the radio interview, Dombrowski said the Tigers' athletic training staff discovered that Zumaya's forearm pain was more consistent with the action of a guitar player than a baseball pitcher. The Tigers asked Zumaya to stop playing the video game, and he did. Zumaya then pitched pain-free during the World Series, and went 0-1 with a 3.00 ERA in three appearances.

I guess I know what gift I'll be sending to the White Sox clubhouse! :D
