Sternberg announces free parking at Tropicana Field again next year! :clapping
How about announcing you are increasing payroll to $50 million and picking up 2 SPs and a 1st baseman? :grouchy

The question is...where does the pitching come from? Aside from Barry Zito, there isn't much on the free agent list.

I don't see any good free agents this year, and the Devil Rays need a good power hitting first baseman. Who should it be? Gary Sheffield (don't know when he'll be a free agent) and Carlos Delgado are out of the picture, obviously. Maybe Aaron Boone may be a good choice, and convert him to first base, as Cleveland didn't give him a contract, so he's granted free agency.

A possiblilty would be Jonny Gomes at 1b. With a healthy shoulder next season I would think his numbers will be alot higher then this year when he played hurt.

Sheffield will be a FA - that actually might be a good fit.

Sheffield will be 38 years old this coming season, not a good fit for a building team. He could be a great fit for a team looking for one missing piece, but, that team is not the Rays.

I'm not saying that you would build around him - you guys already have those type of young players - but he would be a great veteran to stick in your #3 or #4 slot in the lineup.

Does anybody out here honestly think the D'Rays would even consider Sheff & his salary???

Would they? No.
Should they? Yes.

Sheffield is a moody, selfish player who is injury prone at this age. The Rays would be nuts to pour resources that could be used in other places on him. I'd prefer as a temporary upgrade till a younger guy develops a player such as Kevin Millar. The best solution however might be to hand the 1b to Greg Norton in spring training and see what he can do with the opportunity to play everyday.

Well it doesn't matter anyway, the Rays aren't going to spend money on any FA.

Sheffield would only become the next Greg Vaughn.

Great..that means nore fans going to games and more traffic on I-275 :grouchy
Seriously, they are distancing thenselves away from anything that smacks of Naimoli, which is always a good sign.
Now if only they could have brought a FSL team back to Al Lang and have "double-headers" there and at The Trop.

If the D-Rays are actually considering a young first baseman, they should look into the Nationals farm system. The Nats have Nick Johnson in the Majors now, Larry Broadway at AAA and Josh Whitesell in AA. Both Broadway and Whitesell are big power hitters with good gloves. Broadway is definately more ready for the Majors than is Whitesell. Whitesell is either long impressive home runs or strikeouts. He needs more plate discipline but should be ready in about 1-2 years.

The Rays are trying troubled OF Elijah Dukes at first base in the Arizona Fall League. I'm not sure if they are just trying to showcase him to get something for him, or if they are just trying to find a place for him in the lineup. The OF appears set, so he would not crack that part of the lineup unless a trade of Baldelli or Crawford took place. He has yet to show maturity on or off the field yet, so I personally think they are just showcasing him so they can move him for pitching.
