View Full Version : I'm considering becoming an A's fan

After 26 years of being a loyal and hardcore Giants' fan I'm considering tranferring my loyalty to the A's for several reasons:

1) I'm tired of the Giants mediocrity (They've won just three playoff series in my lifetime, born in '68).

2) I'm a huge Big Hurt fan.

3) I'm a sabermetrics guy, so I'm in line with Billy Beane's methods.

4) I'm from the Bay Area so I must root for a local team.

4) I'm tired of the Giants' mediocrity.

So can you guys gives me good reasons to become an A's fan?

Reasons to switch over:

Do you like rooting for the underdog? If so, consider the A's. They have been playing second fiddle to the Giants in the Bay Area media for years and years, yet consistently field better teams. No respect! Also, they have WAY less money than the big market Giants. Gotta appreciate that.

Lastly, they don't have some goofy kid screwing up the batters names over the PA.

a true fan doesn't leave for this reason, they persevere .. ie: a Red Sox, White Sox fan

2) I'm a huge Big Hurt fan.

a true fan doesn't change teams because of 1 player ....BTW, Frank could be gone next year :noidea then what do you do ?

3) I'm a sabermetrics guy, so I'm in line with Billy Beane's methods.

seeing that you are a sabermetric dude, you will feel the need to bring your laptop to the games...Not a Good Idea at the Coliseum

4) I'm from the Bay Area so I must root for a local team.

Cal Train does travel to San Jose for you to hop on the San Jose Giants bandwagon :hp

4) I'm tired of the Giants' mediocrity.

I know ,I know...you already said it once...it's still not a valid reason to bail...

So can you guys gives me good reasons to become an A's fan

I can give you one : dollar dogs on Wed. nights :clapping

But I'm sorry to inform you that it takes more then the reasons you gave to become an A's fan....and there is not enough time or bandwidth here to explain it to a Giant fan... true fans don't bail out.... but feel free to come to some games, but there's no cell phones, laptops, or chardonnay allowed....

And how many generations of "loyal" Red Sox and White Sox fans lived and died between 1917-18 and 2004-05 rooting for thier teams? I don't want to suffer that fate.

What, a fan can't be a fan of one player? Many fans are.

Ha! I don't even own a laptop! So there. :p

I follow the SJ Giants but they are not a major leage team. Winning the California League is not the same as winning the World Series.

Why isn't it valid reason? People change jobs all the time. I think after 26 years it's time to at least consider a different team.

I can go for that!

So what are proper reasons to change teams? :noidea True fans bail out all the time. I know a Brooklyn Dodgers fan that later became Orioles fan later in life

One thing you could do is consider expanding your range of loyalty a little bit north. To say, oh I don't know maybe.....SEATTLE!

:D

Well, in any event I would have to advise against transfering loyalty to the A's since they are our division rival.

Not trying to be mean, but this "switch" is not allowed. Don't be a poser. You can't just like a team because they win. Plus, you already missed the time when it was hip to jump on the Oakland bandwagon (from a national standpoint, that is). Stick with the Giants, they will be winning in three to four years. That being said, I really hope the M's steal Schmidt. And maybe Bonds. But mostly Schmidt.

Who says it's not allowed? I don't follow fads. The main reason I'm considering the switch is because the A's are the next closest team. It's not about the Giants losing season (shoot I put up with the early and mid 1980s and 1994-1996) but the philosophy of the Giants' managment and it's approach to building a ball club.

Before you said it was about the Giants' mediocrity. So, which is it? Anyway, I don't care if you've been a fan for 5 years or for 50 -- you can't switch (especially when the teams are rivals!!?!?!?). In 50 years, I'll still be an M's fan win or lose. And that's how I think most real baseball fans are. Think about how many people lived and died during the Red Sox drought. Furthermore, think about the sweet salvation those 90-year-old Red Sox fans felt when they won!
Someone else pointed this out, are you going to be a fan when Frank Thomas leaves? Edit: Or if they fire Billy Beane?

Why not? Did you remain a fan when the Mariners lost Junior, The Unit and A-Rod?

I've been a Mets fan forever, and never once did i think about switching teams...just cause my team was in last place, didnt mean i stopped going to the games..and now that the mets are in the post..it annoys me seeing alot of frunt runners out there acting like they're huge fans, even though they were rooting for some other team last season

Zito75

There's no rules against switching teams- it's a free country. I mean heck, when I was young and naive, I loved the Mariners. Then I realized at about age 11 or so that the M's were marketed as a new package every year, but always turned out to be the same crappy product. Except for 1995.

Yeah, at the Coliseum the kids that announce the names during weekend games do a darn good job of pronouncing the players' names. ;)

Will you also be rooting for the Raiders instead of the Niners? Unless you really love the Green & Gold I suggest to stick the Orange & Black.

No seriously, I have a strong feeling that next year is going to be extremely successful. Young players like Betancourt, Hernandez, Lopez, etc. have a couple years under their belt. They're going to pick up some good starting pitching in the off season, and away we go!

Seriously, if you want you can bookmark this post and come back a year from now to laugh at me if I'm wrong, but I'm 100% confident I won't be wrong. :D

All I have to say is what took you so long??

We have dollar dog Weds, Taquito Tues (2 for a buck), car giveaways, the left field bleacher bums, the drummers, the A's flag fan crew, banjo man, great tailgate parties and the best damn BBQ sandwiches and peach cobbler you can find in the bayarea.

I've been to phone booth park and the fans are usually yapping away on their cell phones not paying attention to the game. They don't lead cheers for their players. Have you heard the repeated chants of Marco Scutaro's name at the coliseum in the last ALDS game?? It was deafening. That's the norm in Oakland. It's that fan interaction that the whine and cheese crowd lack in San Francisco.

If they fire Billy Beane then the fans should hang their owner.
Ahhh, Billy Beane is a part owner, so the likelihood of that happening is nill.
