Ok guys, I've been wanting to talk about College Baseball for a while, and since there is no forum or thread, I thought I'd make one.

Please comment about you favorite team, their chances next year, your favorite players, and happenings around the nation.

I'll start by talking about... the best team in the nation over the last 5 years!....

The Texas Longhorns!!!

After last years big disappointment, i was down in the dumps, but I still think that this team with be one of the best teams in the nation this year. We lost two first rounders in Drew Stubbs and Kyle McCollugh (i forget how to spell it), But up and coming players like Kyle Russel, Clay Van Hook, Adrian Alaniz, Nick Peoples, and Justin Street have promise to make up for their departure.

The Fall World Series is coming up later this month at the Dell Diamond (home of the Round Rock Express) and will be the first chance we get to see them.

Good Luck Horns!

Oh, man, my Fresno State Bulldogs could very well be hurting this season. We had at least four juniors picked in the first 10 rounds of the draft and another (our starting catcher for most of the year) transferred to San Diego State during the summer. The four juniors drafted included our standout CF and SS and two of our starting pitchers. The Friday starter was a senior himself, so we don't have any of our regular starting pitchers from last year back. There is some talent jostling for the rotation this year, though.

The kicker of the summer, however, was that our 3B, Beau Mills, transferred to Lewis & Clark College in Idaho. He hit 22 HR his frosh year and was a first-team frosh All-American, then hit 14 more bombs last year before being suspended for not doing schoolwork as agreed to in an academic contract that he signed. He was in line to blow away the school career record for career HR this year, and he could very well be a top-20 pick in the draft next June.

So overall the team will be struggling at quite a few positions and it might be a few more years still until we return to national prominence.

Oh, and we gladly take credit for producing the Texas coach, Augie Garrido.

Anyone there know why Mills transferred? I know Lewis & Clark has produced some good players, (Keith Foulke) but why go to Idaho after succss in California?

Also, Augie Garrido is my roommate's uncle. Hes a great guy, just would like to see him smile every once in a while, and not just in his Time Warner Cable commercials :dance

How about a team that over the past five seasons is 10th in shutouts, 8th in hits, 4th in doubles, 3rd in strikeouts and 2nd in home runs, total bases, saves, and by the way had the #1 recruiting class according to Collegiate Baseball this year?

Although to be honest, I think this is North Carolina's year.

Mills transferred because of the academic problem. When he was suspended for the remainder of the season in 2006, it was widely accepted around the Valley that he would not return. The coach of the team he played for in the Alaska Summer League is the head coach at Lewis & Clark, so he probably recruited him hard. Oh, and one of Mills' best friends from high school signed with L&C out of a local JC for the 2007 season.

Also, for those that don't know, Beau Mills is the son of Red Sox bench coach Brad.

So your roomates' uncle is one of the most successful college baseball coaches of all time? Awesome! Hey, do you think you could ask him something for me (or have his nephew ask)? He, of course, played Bulldog baseball in the 1950s. After that I think he was an assistant for the team and also the head coach at a local high school (not the one I went to). But I have a book that has a picture of him in a hat of my old high school. Can you find out if Augie was ever an assistant at Bullard High in Fresno? The person in the Texas athletic department that I emailed a few years back said he only knew of the head coaching jobs. Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.

Yeah, i was friends with this guy long before we got to college, then when we moved in I was talking about how I thought that a lot of UT's baseball success should be attributed to Augie, and he said "Really? Cool. I'll let him know you said that." Needless to say my jaw dropped and called him a liar until i realized they both have the same last name. Its just that Augie Garrido, the way it is said by non-hispanics threw me off.

Well anyway, i'll make sure my roommate asks him.

Personally, I don't really have a favorite team that ever does any good, except maybe BC. I also sorta like USC, but my favorite is Northwestern.

I can't stand the 'Horns, but their field is niiiiiiiiice. I was down in Austin this summer and I got to visit the football field, see the baseball field, see the art museum :ughh (though it was pretty cool for an art museum), see the world's first photograph, and get a hamburger and Frosty at the Wendy's on campus.

Nice man, what were you doing here?

Actually, they are completely renovating the field right now, should be even better. The new Art museum is actually pretty cool, and i dont care about art at all.

Ahh the Wendy's on campus, open til 2 AM, niiiiice.

I was visiting friends of my family, and my mom wanted to see the art museum, so we went there first, then we went and saw the fields. We ate dinner at a Brazilian restaurant (can't remember the name, but you probably know what it is, it's on campus), which was GREAT. They gave us four or five baskets of chips, which was great, because most places I've been to only gives you one.

Whoops, sorry, non-baseball.

Anyway, let's talk NCAA baseball. My Eagles finished 28-25-1 last year. Not horrible, considering their conference (GT, Clemson, UNC, Miami), but they can certainly do better. Much better. I'm hoping for a big '07, though it probably won't happen. Guess I'll have to look to USC and Northwestern...

same here, though i am a little concerned that texas will falter after losing stubbs and McCulloc. I am mainly concerned about losing stubbs because i think our pitching can handle losing McCulloch, we still have Alaniz and Kasparek among others

Yeah...

Hey, I've got a question for ya: If your Longhorns played the Red Sox in a ST game, who would you root for?

Um...... Good question...... Horns. The Horns played the 1930 (i think thats the year) Yankees in an exhibition and were winning the entire game and in the bottom of the ninth, Lou Gherig smacked a home run into a fraternity house's backyard to win the game. The horns need some revenge.

p.s. Im looking for that story online, because I read about it in the school newspaper last year and dont remember it to precision.

Yeah Alaniz and Kasparek will definately be able to hold up the staff... But Stubbs isn't someone you can replace easily.

But it will be nice to have a healthy team... Russel and Danks being hurt during the season didnt help any.

That's one thing I'm gonna miss about moving to Chattanooga from Knoxville: no free Vol Baseball games. They should have a pretty good team this year. I think they underperformed last year, and they will be hungry. Last year's recruiting class was the second in row to be ranked in the top 15 by Baseball America. I just hope they can make it back to the CWS. UT is on the brink of being a power in all three major college sports in the same school year-- that would be nice.

My favorite team is the Kentucky Wildcats, last year we hosted a regional and almost won, but we lost to the College of Charleston. Hopefully, we will have another good season, despite losing our best hitter and one of our best starters in Ryan Strieby and Aaron Tennyson. This year we have received several top 25 pre-season ranks and we have three players, Sean Coughlin, Antone DeJesus, and Collin Cowgill be named All-SEC. Last year we set many first in UK baseball and I hope we can continue to be strong.

LOUISIANA TECH BULLDOGS!!!

We are a program on the rise, we played Arkansas pretty even in a 3 game series in Ruston early this year.

If anyone cares, here's a video of our win over arkansas (9-2). Shows some good shots of our field and apartment-style dorms in the outfield. It is awesome to live in those apartments and watch baseball from your front porch!

Texas is scary good when they are hitting. I am not sold on the pitchig though.

Keep an eye out for the U of San Diego. They will surprise you. Ole Miss is also a team I am intrigued by.

If east carolina gets hot, watch out for them as well.

Nicholson is a great pitcher, but I don't think he'll win it this year. There's a couple other pitchers that are getting more recognition than him so far (Alaniz is one of them, although there's no way he's been better than Nicholson). However, Baseball America just put out an article titled "Kyle Russell is making a case for Player of the Year".

Russell is hitting .358/.464/.877 26 HR, 67 RBI, 9 SB.

Our local Div III school just qualified for the NCAA Tournament in Wisconsin. A hot pitcher put them in the Loser's Bracket of the Regionals and they won 4 in a row including two straight over the Winner's Bracket team. Their record is now 36-5, I think. Go Red Dragons!

Today in the SEC Tournament, Arkansas' Jess Todd owned us, striking out 17, including the first nine (all swinging). We'll have to beat Florida again and Arkansas twice to get to the championship game, which is probably necessary for us to get a national seed.

The Ohio State Buckeyes! (http://www.ohiostatebuckeyes.com/SportSelect.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=17300&KEY=&SPID=10418&SPSID=87801)Thats right, I might be the one person in this silly state that likes the Buckeye Baseball team more than the football. Blasphemy I know. I fostered this love when I was still attending the university, Bill Davis Stadium (http://gosu02.tripod.com/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderpictures/bdoverhead.jpg) was close by, and games were cheap! The best part of it all, is that the Buckeyes are generally good! This year they were 38-24 (though only 15-15 in conference) And made it to the College Station Regional round before being eliminated.

GO BUCKS!!

The 07 Aggies are shaping up to be pretty good. Lost a great second baseman and a great shortstop to the draft (Brandon Hicks is now tearing it up in the AzFL). Pitching staff lost our ace and our number 2, but we retained an excellent pitcher from last year that started to show #1 quality towards the end (see deciding game of College Station regional).

On a positive note, our top hitter was taken in the 5th round and decided to come back which is excellent. However, there's been some movement around the field with some players and there's some young guys in spots that they weren't everyday in last year. Could be an interesting first half as we look for what works.

We pulled in some good transfers to replace key players like Hicks and our catcher tandem of the Stinson boys (not related), though Gonzales (RS-freshman) could earn his way into that role. Ruggiano (brother of team USA player Justin Ruggiano) should be valuable at third since Stouffer was moved to second for the Fall Series, however there are some questions at first.

Stouffer spent time at first last year but the fall series saw a pair of players that were relatively weak in 07 over in the corner. Mckinnerny (sp) showed a good bat in the series but played very little in 07. He's an infielder though I don't expect to have drastic holes where we would need to plug him in.

That's all I've got right now, took up too much space already.

This is a contribution to the College Baseball thread. Here's a list of those 34 college games lasting 20 or more innings. I am positive that I am MISSING some games from the list, especially from the last part of the 19th Century and the early decades of the 20th Century.

Does anyone know of any games OMITTED from the list, or any errors, or any of the missing info? If so, please let me know and share with this thread's readers. Thank you.

Some of you May Remember Eastern Michigan Outfielder Montaous Walton? well anyway i was told that he attends a small College in his Home State, that has very Great baseball Tradition, Current Major league player and Wisconsin Native Bob Wickman Attended the Same College, Now that montaous is Draft Eligible this Season and the Following Season i hope he can Contribute and Put up Productive Numbers like he did in 2006..Swiping up a Season high 22 Stolen Bases, 14 RBI's with a .323 consistent Batting Average.

although his former Eastern michigan teammates Jeff Fischer, George Biddle and Jeff hehr all were selected in the 2007 Major league Draft, hopefully walton can Join them or possibly play In Europe or Germany somewhere Professionally.

I believe I saw the best late inning closer in DIII when I saw Chris Deanes of Virginia Wesleyan shut down Salisbury college early this season. Struck out five of six batters in the meat of their batting order off pure arm speed and a nasty slider in the 9th and 10th inning. Last I heard Salisbury's record since that game was 30-1, the lone loss being the one Deanes closed.

Really? You joined this message board to make one post? You also just broke a cardinal rule of baseball.

My Bad! Salisbury had a 35 game win streak since Deanes shut them down. They lost 1 game in the CAC conference championship which they eventually won.

Scouts shouldn't sleep on the lower divisions just because their athletic budgets aren't as massive as the silver spooners.

Chris Deanes cames into ODAC conference elimination game today and pitched last three innings during a 4-4 tie. Struck out four, retired 8 of 9 batters with no hits.

Radar had him low at 89-90 and tops at 94. Slider baffled the batters he faced. He got the win when his team's CF hit a game winning triple and scored on RF throwing error.

Of course, mine is the Cincinnati Bearcats who are currently playing about 500 yards from me right now.

Are 37-7 and have arguably one of the best players in the NCAA. Buster Posey is batting 470 with 13 homeruns and 52 RBI's and leads the team in hits, runs, doubles, triples. homeruns, rbi's, hit by pitch's, average, and slugging percentage.

Congrats to Fresno State on advancing to the CWS final vs. Georgia. Another tough test ahead, but they are the most battle tested team in the tournament at this point and a TRUE cindarella. They knocked off my USD Torreros(12) in the group of death, ASU(9), Rice(5), and UNC(2) (rankings depend on which poll you check and when, but those here are fairly accurate representations).

Good luck against Georgia!
