View Full Version : 8mm video transfer
I'm looking for someone to transfer an 8mm video tape to a CD or DVD that I can edit on my computer. I have a digital camera now that I can connect to my computer via firewire, so I don't really want to purchase transfer equipment for one video tape. If anyone is interested in doing this for a small fee, please PM me.

Does your video camera have firewire out? If it does you can connect it to your computer? How long is the video in time? Do you have a dvd rom in your computer? The reason I ask is if the video is too big to put on a CD it can be put on a DVD as data. What program would you be using to edit it or view it. I can put it on a CD or DVD as data which will then allow you to edit it. If it gets burned as a DVD you won't be able to edit it. I can put it on as avi, wmv, mov, mpeg, rm, take your pick.

metsfan, i no longer have the 8mm camera--I upgraded to a digital camera with firewire. But I still have this 8mm tape from the summer of a softball game. I only recorded our team on offense, so it's an hour long at most.
Yes, I have DVD rom on my computer, so DVD data is probably the way to go. I'm not sure what format however--I don't have any editing software yet, so I guess whichever format is most commonly used. Can you recommend any inexpensive easy to use software? I don't need anything fancy--I just want to pull out clips of each hitter's swings to make their own personalized disc.
Thanks for your response!!

If you have windows - windows movie maker will do OK. On a Mac, they have IMovie. I also use this program which is free: http://www.v1home.com/getthev1software.asp. What I like about this is you can draw on it and such. If you get the paid version you can put 2 videos side by side.
Let me check at school and see if we have a 8mm camcorder. I don't have one personally anymore but our school might.
I have the V1 home software. But like I said, I want to be able pull each swing from the original and add it to a file folder for each girl, if that makes sense.

The problem is the 8mm footage has to be digitized first. Either to DV and then to MPEG-2 or directly to MPEG-2. You can buy a set-top DVD recorder/burner but you have to get one with RCA or S/Video inputs for the recorder, and not just firewire.
I could do this. I have a analog digitzing card in my editing computer and from there author/convert/burn DVDs. I live in Chicago tho and it would probably be just as easy bringing the tape to any wedding videographer or video service place in your area.

I didn't want to have to buy any of this stuff since I now have a minidv camera and firewire connection. This was a tape that I had recorded before I got the minidv camera and firewire.

I sent the tape to metsfan, so hopefully it works out. I live in a small town, and there is only one video service place, and the guy wanted an outrageous amount to convert the tape.
Thanks for your response whitesoxnut. I was hoping that you would be one to reply! :)
