The Giants won the pennant! (http://www.baseballhalloffame.org/exhibits/online_exhibits/1951/default.htm)

If I could go back to one moment in history (other than Red Sox's history) It would have to be this.

The Famous Call:
"Bobby Thomson, up there swingin'.
He's had two outta three — a single and a double —
and Billy Cox is playing him right on the third-base line.

One out, last of the ninth.
(Ralph) Branca pitches.
Bobby Thomson takes a STRIKE called on the inside corner.

Bobby hitting at two-ninety-two.

He's had a single and a double,
and he drove in the Giants' first run with a long fly to center.
Brooklyn leads it, four to two.

Hartung down the line at third, not taking any chances.
Lockman without too big of a lead at second,
but he'll be runnin' like the wind if Thomson hits one.

Branca throws.

THERE'S A LONG DRIVE!
THAT'S GONNA BE IT, I BELIEVE!
THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT!!
THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT!!
THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT!!
THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT!!

BOBBY THOMSON HITS INTO THE LOWER DECK OF THE LEFT-FIELD STANDS!
THE GIANTS WON THE PENNANT,
AND THEY'RE GOING CRAZY!
THEY'RE GOING CRAZY!
HEY, HO!!

[crowd hysteria]

I don't believe it! I don't believe it! I do not believe it!
Bobby Thomson hit a line drive into the lower deck of the left-field stands,
and the great place is going crazy.

The Giants — Horace Stoneham has got a winner.
The Giants won it by a score of five to four,
and they're pickin' Bobby Thomson up and carryin' him off the field.." - Russ Hodges

With all due respect, kskid2599, it would not!

For me, it would be tomorrow, OCTOBER 4, 1955, 51 years ago, at 3:43PM! :clapping

As much as it pains you Deb, I wish I was alive to see the rivalry that you all witnessed. Watching the HBO Documentary on the Thomson shot, I can imagine sitting in both Ebbets Field, and the Polo Grounds.

Though I rued the day at the time, in retrospect, it was almost the Giants finest hour of the 1950s (the other being the 1954 series).

It also brought lifetime recognition to a fine gentleman, who carried his fame with constant grace.

How fitting that Bobby Thomson returns to the NY area on October 30th to be honored.

The memory of it all just evokes a painful realization that the PG and EF and those two teams don't exist here anymore - and haven't for nearly a half century.

Agreed, although the truth about the broadcast is that not that many people heard it. For one, there was sevral other broadcasts of the game that day, and it was also nationally broadcasted on TV(one of the first games ever to be seen nationwide on TV) The only reason we have a recording of it is because a Dodger fan recorded it so that he could here Russ Hodges cry when the Dodgers won.(he was the Giant's radio broadcaster) Or atleast that's how I heard the story.

Anyone else feel the way that my dad did in hearing that it was 55 years ago? His reaction was to shake his head, sigh, and say "How did 55 years go by so fast?'

I read this to my BROOKLYN born and raised 80 year old father last night. He completely agreed with it. Then he relayed to me the sense of dread that he, as a BROOKLYN DODGER fan, felt when he heard, listening to the radio, that Ralph Branca was coming in to pitch. He still very clearly remembers THAT game 55 years later.

Yes. I was sick so I had to listen to the game and I heard the call. It really was just a few minutes ago.

The teams DO still exist. Just close your eyes and open your mind. It's all there---including things you THINK you forgot, but really didn't. Each time you do it, different things appear.

Though I'd never considered it from that perspective, Lou, you are right.

I CAN visualize scenes I saw at EF and the PG as if they were today.
