On the topic of us acquiring a power lefty bat, it was reported yesterday that 1B Mike Jacobs left the team (Marlins) for personal reasons, I don't know if this helps us or not? I'd like to think somewhere there is a power lefty bat that is unhappy with his team or the team is unhappy with him, and we can acquire that which was previously thought to be unattainable. I don’t want to make light of his reasons, so I’ll just say: I wish him all the best, I hope everything is OK with him, his family, etc., once he does want to come back to play again, I’d love to help facilitate him and have him in Pittsburgh!

Lefty power Bats under 30:

1B Nick Johnson WAS 28yr L/L Signed

3B Eric Chavez OAK 29yr L/R Signed

OF/1B Nick Swisher OAK 26yr S/L Signed

1B Adam Laroche ATL 27yr L/L Signed

1B Adrian Gonzalez SD 24yr L/L Signed

1B/C Mike Jacobs FLA 26yr L/R Signed

1B Lyle Overbay TOR 29yr L/L Signed

RF Brad Hawpe COL 27yr L/L Signed

RF/3B Abrey Huff HOU 30yr L/R F.A.'07

RF Nick Markakis BAL 23yr. L/L Signed

RF Jeremy Hermida FLA 22yr L/R Signed

there are also (less desirable) possible FA like :
RF Trot Nixon BOS 32-33yr L/L FA '07
1B Erubiel Durazo MIN 31-32 L/L FA '07
1B Travis Lee TB 31 L/L FA '07

Of those players....

Swisher, LaRoche, Markakis, Gonzalez will NOT be moved. You would have to give up WAY more than you would want to. Hermida, Hawpe, Johnson, and Chavez are also pretty tied to their teams, or they will also want a lot more than you will want to give up.

Best bets will be Huff and Nixon, although Nixon gets hurt a lot, so Huff is most likely.

My first hunch about Jacobs was that it's probably just a temporary family matter. And now having read your post more closely, you didn't miss that either. So turning to who else might be available...I can see Hee Seop Choi maybe being a fit in Pittsburgh if Boston wanted to deal him from Triple-A (not a big jump). He's not the greatest -- but he's only 27 and made just $725,000 in 2005.
