September 28, 2006. Shortstop Bill Jennings, the 43rd oldest of 63 living former Browns, is celebrating the 81st anniversary of his birth this morning.

Happy Birthday, Bill Jennings! :clapping

Bill Jennings compiled 5 successful years in the minor leagues before playing his only time in the majors with the 1951 Browns. Jennings broke into baseball by hitting .310 for the 1946 Trenton club of the Interstate League. Bill returned to play for Trenton in 1947, hitting .277 with 8 homers. In 1948, Jennngs moved up to Jersey City of the International League, where his average fell to .250. In 1949-1950, Bill Jennings hit .285 each season for the Minneapolis Millers of the American Association. His 23 homers for the 1953 season were his career high, and they helped him to earn time with the '51 Browns. Bill failed to hit .200 in a two-month, 64-game experience with the Browns. His .179 batting average with no HR's would cost him a second chance in the big time, but Jennings would play the balance of the '51 season with Oakland and San Diego of the Pacific Coast League. After two additional bad years with the stick for the '52 Toronto club and a '53 season that started at Charleston snd ended back again at Toronto, the professional baseball career of Bill Jennings ended.

Over the years, Bill Jennings and his lovely wife have been regular attendees of the annual Browns banquets in St. Louis. They are two of the nicest people you could ever hope to meet.
