Watch out 500 HR Club!

Here comes the masses. Next season looks to bring about several new faces to this historic club. What we have been talking about for several years now is soon be be coming to light, in the next couple seasons.

In 2007, we will be looking to see 4 (possibly 5) new faces appearing in the 500 HR club.

These players are:

Frank Thomas - started the year with 448 HR's, hit 38 so far, and 486 career HR's to date, is a mere 14 away from the milestone, look for him to be the next one in - and many said he would never make it. Here's hoping he fairs better than McGriff, so let's hope the Big Hurt doesn't get hurt!

Jim Thome - like Thomas, had another breakout year, hitting 42 HR's, to up his total from 430 to 472 HR's, to make him the second closest to the mark (only 28 away).

Manny Ramirez - We all knew it wouldn't be long before he made it here. He is consistently one of the best HR hitters (and hitters period) in the game. With his solid 34 this year, he is sitting at 469 so far, leaving him at 31 to go. Look for him and Thome to make a race of it to see who'll make it #2 next season.

And all eyes are on this one (or at least mine are)

Alex Rodriguez - seen as many as the one to dethrone Hank (and anyone else who stands in his way...:D ). He is currently sitting at 37 away, which is only a decent season for him, so assuming he rebounds from this "down" year, he'll be there no problem, and at the ripe young age of 32!

And bringing up the rear, the longshot of this group:

Gary Sheffield - he would be in the mix as well if it weren't for injuries ruining most of his season. Even if he had only hit 20 HR's this season, he would have a more than realistic chance of making it, but with only 4 HR's this year, due to limited playing time from injuries, he only has 453 so far, and is 47 away. So theoretically it is a possiblity of him making it next year (his career high is only 43), but more than likely, he will be the sole entrant in the 2008 class.

So now that I have said all of this, tell me your thoughts. The conversations in the past have talked about the watering down of the 500 HR club, the huge influx of newcomers. We have already dealt with the McGwire/Sosa/Bonds side, so here is the next group to come in - how does this affect things? Is the time of 500 HR's being devalued around the corner, or is it already here? are we past the whole thing, and all of these players should be viewed on the same level as current members, or what? Speak you mind (within reason of course ;) ).

Wow, 32 years old and in the 500 club. Amazing, imagine if he can still hit homeruns at Barry Bonds age. Even till he's 40. You're talking about a guy who could hit over 800.

Jimmie Foxx was 32 when he got in the 500 HR club. A-Rod will be younger b/c "XX" was about 16 days away from being 33 when he hit his 500th. I always look to Jimmie Foxx b/c he accomplished so much when he only played the majority of 13 seasons....but A-Rod deserves a tip of the cap!

Please edit, I was totally confused.

EDIT: It really is amazing how easily this milestone has come (will come?) to all of these players. I know, watered down pitching, body aromor, etc. Still quite an accomplishment.

All good hitters, and deserve that they get. As much as I am not a fan of A-rod he is a good hitter among other things. I am glad to see Frank Thomas leading the pack though...a man you don't hear enough about anymore.

The scary thing is Pujols is already halfway there and he's only 26. If he keeps up his current pace he will join the 500 HR club by the time he's 31.

Actually Pujols has 248 at age 26 in 6 seasons. At his current pace it will take him another 6 seasons or until age 32 to reach 500 home runs.

We are going to be adding 500 HR guys almost at will, while the 300 winner (after Glavine) will go the way of the dodo bird.

Mussina has an outside chance, if he stays healthy and stays on a dominant team. He also has a chance at 3000 K. But that feat will also be pretty exclusive from here on out (Smoltz maybe?).

Interesting, I put up a poll in Between Inning about whether we'd have any more 300 game winners in the next 2 decades. More people thought that would happen than the Cubs winning a World Series, a player hitting 73+ HRs or a pitcher getting 57+ saves.

Might have been because originally the poll said "200-game winners". That's why I voted for it.

Touchè, although that was changed very early on in the poll.

Some posters did mention that Halladay, Santana, and Zito may have a shot in years to come.

Here we go again. :D We will see more 300 game winner but not before 2017 at least. Some of the top contenders

Barry Zito
Mark Buerhle
Carlos Zambrano
Johan Santana
C.C. Sabathia
Roy Halladay
Roy Oswalt

...just to name a few.

We had a good discussion about this.

How can you not give Randy Johnson a crack at 300? He's at 280 wins and one more year with the Yankees where he will win 15 games behind that offense so long as he's healthy. Then after that he'll get a job with some team to get 5 more W's one would think.

Yup. He should do it-- don't know why I missed it.

Oops I forgot about him and Glavine. I was more thinking about of the young guns.
