The Tigers clinched a playoff spot today with their 11-4 win over Kansas City. This is the first time since 1987 that they have made the playoffs. I'm estatic as we speak. The Tigers haven't been in the plaoffs during my life time until now.:gt

I am not an oldster...but hearing you say you have not seen a playoff Tiger team in you lifetime....Makes me feel 2 kinds of ways, old and happy for all the other young folks that have not seen this team do this well. Being in my thirties, I remember both those 80s teams fondly. I hope this team finishes the deal, but if not, it was a great year.
GO TIGERS :gt

I tip my hat to them. They were on top of a tough division the whole year. Here's to a good playoff run! If Yankees won't be able to do it, I certainly hope they will.
Who would have thought that after losing 119 games only 3 years ago that this wouldve happened???

Im happy for the Tigers that now, after all these years, Detroit can say that theyre proud of having a good baseball team. And kudos for jim Leyland, in his first season at the helm in D'town, the Tigers had their first winning season since 1993, and now that they clinched a playoff berth for the first time since 1987, when they had the best record that year with a 98-64 record, but were eliminated by those "underdog" Twins in 5 games, to make things worse, it was at home, to a team with 13 fewer wins in the regular season than those Tigers.
Anyway, let the celebration begin in Detroit, 94 wins so far is a great accomplishment for those young Tigers.
PS: 2006 is so far a great year in sports in Detroit, the Red Wings had the best record in NHL, and the Pistons had the best record in the NBA, I think that the Tigers have a great chance of finishing with the best record in the MLB.

congrats to the tigers for being able to turn it around. Its about time the AL Central is so good! The Twins are right behind the Tigers, and should clinch a playoff birth within the next few days! Its a very exciting time of year.

Considering how the Wings and Pistons bowed out, a great year is a slight overstatement, but for three pro teams to have that level of success, not to mention the Shock winning the WNBA title, Detroit is very much on the map.
Now, about those Lions . . .

Nah, da Bears are goin' all the way, but I don't even look at the NFL until after the World Series.
What is as remarkable as the Tigers turning around a record worst in '03, and a dozen straight losing seasons, is the fact that they have led the AL Central since May 21. That is eighteen weeks of battling, 136 days of holding off the World Champ White Sox, and the hottest team in MLB, the Twins. Keep winning, Detroit Tigers; congratulations and good luck in the post-season, and most of all: Here's to the fans and the support they've given to this enormous accomplishment by their team. Seems like only yesterday the Tigers were playing in one of the most exciting and nail-biting Series in my lifetime, with Mickey Lolich winning games 2, 5, and 7 against the NL pennant winning St. Louis Cardinals in October 1968.:clapping

Teams still schedule them. It's bad when you long for mediocrity.
Well said, trosmok. Outside of one jaded Detroit-area columnist (see the Tigers forum) we're all enjoying this. Well, those of us with the rationality to do so are enjoying this, late season slump or not.

OK, before I say what I'm going to say, please remember that I really do like the Tigers this year, I'd like to see them do well after those disastrous recent years and the long drought, and I admire Tigers fans for their good humour when their team was nearly the worst ever.
But...
With the Tigers playing the Blue Jays starting tonight, I can't help remembering 1987...and even though we got the best kind of revenge by winning it all since then, I'd sure love to see some payback!
You're just lucky there's a cushy little wild card to fall back on nowadays!

Hey, the Tigers may have won that battle, but the wounds didn't heal enough in time to prevent them from losing the war. After beating the Jays, they had nothing left.
Now just lay down quietly this time. ;)
