Does anyone know how to increase pitching movement? Mainly on a fastball and sinker?

I'm a lefty, and i have extreme movement, probably because i have a weird arm slot. I'm not a hard thrower though, (I'm 13 and throw about 65 or around that area) , you can be the judge on how hard that is. I usually don't care about speed though, so i was trying to get a sinker working for me the last week. It's pretty nice, but very inconsistent. Does anyone know how to make my sinker have better movement? My dad tells me it's because i don't throw over the top, but I thought that is the most retarded thing i have ever heard, because i was told that you could throw any pitch from any arm slot.

Am I an idiot or is my father right?

Listen to your father!
Arm slot will vary the angle in which the the ball breaks.

So a sinker is more effective overhand instead of 3/4?

Yes - coming over the top with a curve ball grip will give you something closer to a 12-6 curve. 3/4 arm slot will give you more of a 2-8 curve.

curveball grip?, I thought he was talking about a sinker.....wouldn't that be a 2-seamer?

Yes to throw a sinker you would use a two seam fastball grip. Many coaches would ask you to take both fingers of a fast ball grip and move them together closer.

I should have said..

Yes - coming over the top with a curve ball grip will give you something closer to a 12-6 curve. 3/4 arm slot will give you more of a 2-8 curve. It is the same with fast ball grips. Arm slots will help dictate what movement you get.

I grip my sinker like a split-finger fastball.

Hey man,
You're father, for the most part, is right. Arm angle effects every pitch, but doesn't mean you can't throw any pitch from any angle. I throw from 3/4 and have trouble with curves, but I can still throw one pretty well. Also, there are several different grips that can effect movement. What distance is the pitchers mound from the plate? Your pitch may not move as much from a shorter distance. IE: Your pitch has more room to move on a HS field than on a Little League field. Hope this helps! Good Luck!

I don't know if you're an idiot or not, but your father's right.

It's much easier to throw a sinker from a more vertical arm slot because that accentuates the vertical movement of the ball. Because of how our eyes are aligned, the brain has the hardest time processing purely vertical movement.

I think Wang grips his sinker with his fingers a little more on the outside of the ball than a 2-seamer not like a splitter though. The only things you can throw with that grip are a splitter (duh) and a forkball. Oh and with a sinker you need to use alot of wrist snap unless you want it to be like a slow fastball in the middle of the plate.
