Dear Commisioner-
I am looking for my grandfather who played for the st. louis browns in the 40s I am not sure if he played for the farm team or exactly what team, but he did play for the Capahas later in his career, his name is Roy Lehman Smith, he was a right handed pitcher who threw in the 90s. I have a pic of my dad and my grandpa in a capahas uniform, but my father tells me that he played for the st. louis browns and that he had struck out Babe Ruth once and then the next time Babe Came up to the plate he hit it a mile, and after the game they called my grandpa smitty, and in the locker room after the game they said, HEY SMITTY How far do u think that Babe Hit that Ball? And my Grandpa Gingerly replied the ball hasnt landed yet! lol. So, if you could get some information for me that would be great.

It would be more help if you new what team he played for early in his career. What was the year he struck out Babe?

Nobody named Smith appears on a Brown's roster in the 40's.
The only Roy Smiths in the Baseball almanac played in the 80's-90's and another in the 2001-2 season.
ruth played from 1914-34 in the AL Could it have been earlier than the 40's
Could he have played under a different name?
If not, it may have been an exhibition game while your Grandpa was in the Minors.

As the others before me have already stated, there is no record of anyone named Roy Lehman Smith having ever played professional baseball at any level after 1930. If this Smith ever faced Babe Ruth in an actual game, it would be impossible to confirm without a lot of data to refute the apparent truth that he never played professional baseball at all.

We get a lot of requests on this site from people wanting to know their father's and grandfather's records with the Browns. Most of the time, not just some of the time, we have to report that these beloved family members did not play professional baseball at all.

Everyone will have to draw their on conclusions about why this happens so often.

As for Roy Lehman Smith, maybe he did play ball, and maybe he did have that storied big day against Babe Ruth. The problem is, if he did, none of us can find any record of him ever even having played. Sorry.

After Ruth left organized baseball, wasn't he doing a variety of things around the country, like refereeing prizefights? Is it possible that this may have happened in a setting outside a usual baseball game?
