About three days ago I started pitching straight down. However, today when I was starting our first game, in the second inning every time I went down my back would start hurting, just a little below the shoulder. I had to be taken out in the second inning, could my new windup be the cause of this?

Form what you are describing, that could be rotator cuff pain. It the muscles that help you throw. Your new mechanics could possibly be causing that pain, make sure to stretch out real good before you practice, and preferbaly see a trainer/doctor.

Straight down from where my head would be.

If you are throwing with your elbow above your shoulder *when about to throw* then that is probably what is causing the problems and that will cause rotator cuff problems especially when your older.
If you are not sure what i'm talking about Dontelle Willis throws with his elbow above his shoulder, and his mechanics are awful :ughh

sorry, I'm missing something. Do you mean you used to pitch with a regular kind of 3/4 motion, with your right hand coming across your body and finishing down towards left foot, whereas now you are coming straight over the top and after release your arm is coming vertical down the middle of your body? If so, where does hand/arm finish, right side or left side?

Sometimes it finishes straight down in the middle, sometimes to the left. I am inconsistent, I was just trying to see which worked better for me in a game, left or middle, and it started hurting after 20 pitches. I kept going and in the third inning I walked the first 2 batters on 8 pitches, then it started hurting a lot more so I had the coach take me out.
EDIT: My brother says its my latissimus dorsi, but I wonder if the reason it hurts is because of my new windup, or if it was just a coincidence that my lat started hurting at that time.

What does your wind up look like

I'll describe it:
As I kick my left leg up high, I move it to about 2 inches off the ground and bring my hand out of my glove. My right knee bends down as I throw my glove up and aim it at the plate, and then as I throw it my right leg shoots back up and my arm goes straight down.
Not a very good description..

Could you by any chance get a video clip of your delivery? Perhaps have a parent, friend or sibling just video tape you going through your motion.

Before we get to that, can someone just answer this:
Is it possible for my lat to be hurting because of my windup?

Answer: I don't think so.
Aloha Charger:
I don't see how anyone can finish pitches with their arm going straight down without injury occurring. Finishing straight down would create a huge amount of unnecessary torque and strain on the entire shoulder complex and supporting muscles in the back. Your arm would have to follow an awkward and unnatural motion where first it's coming across your body as you get to and just past release point, and then would have to make a sharp turn to the right and then straighten out just as huge decleration is occurring. It's a recipe for injury -- I do not think I have ever seen anyone with that kind of follow-through. Even "straight over the top" pitchers always finish down and to the left Look at all the pitchers on siggy's site: the only question is how far down they finish--they ALL finish across their body and to the left (RHP of course).

How many pitches do you throw an outing?
How many pitches do you throw in a week?
