View Full Version : Does anybody know...
Does anybody know what the longest hitless game streak is or do they not record that stuff?

Mike Timlin and Jose Mesa have a tight battle going.
Timlin has played in 958 games without getting a hit.
Mesa has played in 961 games without getting a hit.
Jesse Orosco had no hits in his last 997 appearances.
For non-pitchers, Herb Washington played in 105 games without getting a hit.
Of course, Washington never had an AB, and I'm guessing that those relief pitchers have had very few, so if we apply the rule on hitting streaks -- exempting games in which there are no plate appearances or in which the only plate appearances are walks or hbps -- the question is still open.
If I were going to research the question, I start with Bob Buhl's 0-for-70 season, determine how many games that entailed and then check into his previous and subsequent seasons.

Unless I counted wrong or missed somebody.....according to retrosheet.org these are the longest:
Fred Gladding - 39 games
Bob Buhl - 38 games
Ron Herbel - 33 games (plus 25 and 24 games)
Dean Chance - 32 games (plus 24 and 23 games)
Interesting that all four were to a degree contemporaries; though Buhl's career started before the others', all four were simultaneously active for a few years in the '60s.
