Bob Dillinger: Another
Quality Brown Dealt
Away for Money.

3rd baseman Bob Dillinger (BR/TR) broke into the big leagues with the Browns (1946-49) and he finished his six-season MLB career with the Philadelphia Athletics (1950), the Pittsburgh Pirates (1950-51), and the Chicago White Sox (1950). Dillinger finished his 753-game MLB career with a BA of .306, only 10 HRs, but with 106 stolen bases.

On December 13, 1949, the Browns dealt away Bob Dillinger and outfielder Paul Lehner to the Philadelphia Athletics in exchange for Ray Coleman, Frankie Gustine, Billy DeMars, minor league outfielder Ray Ippolito and, most importantly, $ 100,000 in cash. The fact that Dillinger already was age 31 made it easier for the Browns to pull the trigger. As it turns out, the Browns landed on the side of good judgment or good luck this time. Dillinger was gone from the big leagues after only two more seasons.

On this date in 2006, Bob Dillinger is the 16th oldest of 63 living former Browns.

Dillinger is also one of the reasons Luke Sewell was fired as Browns manager. Management wanted Dillinger to play; Sewell didn't want to play Dillinger (for whatever reason).

There is a brand new biography of Bob Dillinger available. It's a really good read, if anyone here is interested... he's quite senior now, but he still gets around pretty well.
You could order the book from the Philadelphia Athletics site, or from Bob's new site (under construction) bobdillinger.com. thanks!
