Barry! and by a decent margin too. He finally got enough PAs to qualify.
BTW, Barry is fifth in OPS, at .997 too.
He is the Giants MVP this season already. If they make the playoffs, he should get some NL MVP consideration.

The last time I checked those stats, the NL leader in OBP was Bobby Abreu, BTW, that was Labor Day!!!!

Dont tell that to Barroids, about leading the league in OBP and Base on Balls, he might consider returning next year, I dont want to hear more about him anymore, good or bad.

Amazing. This guy's declining and he's a better hitter than 95% of baseball. Arguably the best player ever.

Wow, how about that, Bondser has the OBP lead. I'm impressed. Did you say something about him being an MVP candidate? What are you on?

Probably something that Barry gave him during a roid rage.

Well... maybe if you stopped bashing Bonds enough you'd realize that he has already stated he was coming back for 2007

Most people that lead the league in OBP are MVP candidates. But since everyone hates him he wont get any votes. Yeah about the Roids, im really sure they help him take walks too?
Bonds led the majors in OBP though he didn't get 502 PA. He was 9 PA short, but even with those added and assumed to be outs he was ahead of 2nd place. He will be listed as the major league leader and get 2 stars on the baseball-reference leaders page.

Fear of what he could do likely led to the walks. Check out the number of IBBs he'd gotten since 2001. I figure pitchers must've given up pitching to him once they'd reached 3 balls.

And it's possible that these pitchers were juiced.

Pujols ended up leading the NL with a .431 OBP

This is incorrect.
Bonds led with a .454. Elias will add 9 null PAs to bring him to the qualifying 502 AB (which would make it .446), so Bonds led the majors.
This is based on major league rule 10.23, which applies to the major league officially sanctioned batting and slugging championships. MLB doesn't recognize OBP.

That category was in MLB.com and ESPN.com, Pujols won it over Bonds, because he didnt have enough PA's to qualify.

yeah, but it doesnt really matter what mlb.com and espn.com think, Bonds won. MLB has no OBP rules, i think.
That category was in MLB.com and ESPN.com, Pujols won it over Bonds, because he didnt have enough PA's to qualify.
Those are simple database sorts, they do not think. They would screw up the batting average leader and the slugging leader for the same reason had someone hit .400 with 501 PA or slugged .800.
Elias sports is the gatekeeper. They will list Bonds as the leader in the NL and MLB. So will baseball-reference.
This is from mlb rule 10.23 (available on mlb.com):
"EXCEPTION: However, if there is any player with fewer than the required
number of plate appearances whose average would be the highest, if he
were charged with the required number of plate appearances or official
at bats, then that player shall be awarded the batting championship or
slugging championship."
The MLB doesn't appear to have an official OBP champion.

Well, anyway, if Bonds led or not, the pitchers dont have the balls to pitch to him, thats a fact, and doesnt make sense either right now.

Im guessing it has something to do with his .545 Slugging %, 556 Slugging off righties who have issued 82 of his 115 walks. Not as good as it has been in the past, but still not something pitchers will be eager to deal with.

Actually pitchers pitched to Bonds a lot more during the end. When he started to get hot. Most of his IBB'S came early in the season.

Well it sounded like you were trying to imply that his recent power surge has caused him most of his walks. When infact, earlier in the season, when he couldn't hit all that well, pitchers were intentionally walking him a lot.
EvanAparra
10-02-2006, 09:01 PM
No, i didnt mean to imply that at all. I just states his Slugging for the season, not the end of the season. My point was to say that he is still very feared, and for good reason, by righties.
I think Ray Durham's success was part of the reason for the decreased walk rate.
EvanAparra
10-02-2006, 09:10 PM
Decreased?
Bonds' walk rate decreased over the last 2 months of the season. Opposing managers mentioned Ray Durham's great stats after a Bonds walk as a reason for not IBB'ing Bonds.

I am not sure but I think Bonds was leader in all MLB in OBP.
BTW,
It`s correct to say OBP or must be OBA?

OBP is the correct term
and I don't think Bonds* qualified with enough plate appearance to be #1, but he was comfortably higher than Pujols was
unless baseball-reference is mistaken, Bonds led the majors.

Elias sent out a release that says Bonds will be recognized as the OBP leader. It's really just a clarification of rule 10.23.
I'm surprised that I haven't seen some 'How Bonds Stole the OBP Lead from Pujols' articles yet........
