I am 13 years old and throw around 70 mph. I want to get that up to 75 before next year when I move up to highschool. What can I do? I think my mechanics are almost perfect, and where-ever I go people tell me the secret to speed is proper mechanics! However, there has to be something that seperates Roger Clemens and me besides mechanics. Long toss can't be the answer, because I do that all the time and it doesn't do anything.

BTW:

I am 5"5' and weigh 130 pounds if it means anything.

I have a change up, a two seam, and a four seam.

Also, I am wondering if I should throw from the top like Curt Schilling and Roger Clemens, or from the side like Randy Johnson. (I have tried both, and coincidentially they look just like Schillings and Johnsons.)

Do some research on overload / underload training and Coop DeRenne.

I would suggest you consider posting some video.

Throw with the "intent to throw hard" and measure the velocity. Measure each throw and know the velocity of the last throw before you make the next throw. (Feedback is absolutely necessary for improvement.)

Your montra needs to be "Learn to throw hard then learn to control it".

None of this is my original thought. It comes from research of Paul Nyman, Coop DeRenne, Ron Wolforth, ...

If your change-up is good enough and your 2-seam has a good tail or cut motion then i dont think you need that extra 5 mph at the jv level.

The change is good, but the 2 seam needs some work. However, I may not need more speed, but want it. When I reach highschool (Next Year) I am going to start throwing a splitter as well. As good as my other pitches get, I want to play college ball. I know this is too early to predict that, but if I want to play there my fastball would have to be around 85.

As long as you can touch 70, your ball isn't straight like an arrow, and you have control you will make your JV team. I bet you. You are sort of short for a freshmen but i don't think they really look at that to much.

Also, have you considered 3/4 like most major league pitchers (arm motion) ?

It really doesn't matter if you throw over-hand, side-arm, submarine, or 3/4. Whichever feels the most comfortable to you, do it.

I am not a freshman. Where I am from, 8th grade is still middle school.

Yeah, I'm sorry. I meant freshmen team.

You should be throwing about 75+ for JV... more than that maybe.

But, yeah, 70 should be fine. There is a kid on my junior high team (8th grade also..) who throws 74 mph and he is the fastest pitcher on the team and most kids are scared to go up against him.

74 is alot faster than all the kids think it is.....
