I've read in a couple of different places that putting lefties back to back n your lineup is generally a mistake (most reacently in one of Tango's blog entries (http://www.insidethebook.com/ee/index.php/site/article/watching_a_baseball_game_is_like_watching_a_touris t_play_blackjack/)), and I was wondering about the details are on this subject. Why is having back to back lefties in your lineup such a problem?

I'm guessing it's because a manager would bring in a lefty pitcher to face a lefty batter and if the next batter happens to be lefty then the manager will leave the same pitcher in due to the advantage. However if the next hitter were to be a righty the manager (if playing percentages and what not) would go to the bullpen and get a right hand pitcher and pretty much having used the LHP for 1 out.

There are tons of left handed batters that are right handed and throw right.
Like myself.

Ohms - I do not think there is a problem or taboo in using LH - LH. Coaches generally mix up their line ups to maximize their offensive opportunities. Having LH - RH - LH - RH has better opportunities for success than LH -LH - RH - RH. Keeping the definse on their toes is part of the game. That of course depends on who the hitters are and how well and how they hit.

I agree Jake, which is why I wanted to ask for opinions about the subject. On his blog reacently, Tango highlighed having back to back LH hitters in your lineup as a common managerial mistake.
I think that the situation that he was primarily refering to though was pinch hitting with a LH hitter, when the next hitter in your lineup is already a LH hitter.
Anyway, thanks for the replies.

Well, I would say a majority of LH batters are "true leftys", In all seriousness, putting two lefties up against a right handed pitcher isint any diffrent then putting up two righties against a lefty.

With my 11Us, I like to go LH, RH, LH, RH, RH... because it increases the likelihood that the pitcher will walk one of my guys. It's hard for some young pitchers to adjust to a LH after throwing to a RH. They will tend to miss outside to the LH.
The root cause of the problem is that pitchers tend to spend too much time looking at the batter and not enough at the glove.
If you're focused on the glove, it doesn't matter if the batter is RH or LH.
