What do you mean? Anything in particular? I have never played catcher in my life but i do have a firm understanding of it.

Hmm, my tips on general catching would be this:

(no order)

1. Hold your glove still when catching, some catchers pull the glove back to make a "softer catch" or something like that but some pitchers don't like it when there is a shaky target.

2. When throwing, throw the ball like a dart, don't take the time to do all the fancy mechanics you should just throw as quick as possible. Start at your shoulder and just whip it as hard as you can.

3. Try to make the throws low to the basemen because that way there is less movement to tag the runner out. But not low enough that it hops or anything because short hops make the player harder then it needs to be.

4. To save your knees, i see some kids wearing these things called "Knee Savers" that go over your leg and there is big ol' pads behind your knees so it doesn't hurt you to squat for so long.

5. Always take a quick glance to 1st, 2nd, 3rd when there is runners on after the pitch to see if they don't have their heads in the game or you catch them leadin' off too much.

6. To throw the ball harder you should use the mechanics you do in pitching, i'm not saying take a ton of time but hips rotate before shoulders to put more torque on it.

For anything more you should look it up on google, or some other search engine. I'm sure there is people here that'd disagree with my advice. I also think there is a catching coach around here so keep an eye out.

I don't mean to be insulting but if you've never caught in your life why would you go out and give someone tips/advice about catching?

Actually, in pitching, you take your arm all the way back, but in catching i'm pretty sure you short arm the ball to get it to second faster. THrowing as a pitcher and catcher are a litle different.

Bug,

It would be easier to help if we had a specific skill that you are looking for some help on?

Are you a parent? Player? what age player are we discussing here?

that's what i meant by "throwing the ball like you would a dart" unless i forgot to mention that. And since you do that you wouldn't rotate your hips before shoulders?

CanadianKid, Read what i said after that and stop being an ******.

be a student of the game... you have to know what everyone does in every situation... the more vocal you can be to telling what your infield is doing in every situation, what your outfield is doing in every situation, and what you and your pitcher are doing in every situation, the better your team is... You are in on every pitch... catchers aren't just leaders they are the leader.

I don't mean to offend, but this is an opportunity to voice something that many here agree with.

Refer to this thread for what I'm talking about: http://baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=50331

This forum is being clogged with threads like this. I'm sure that there are no fewer than ten threads about catching in here. People simply post questions before they look for the answer.

Any tips on being a catcher????? (http://baseball-fever.com/showthread.php?t=45295&highlight=catching)

These threads were found by sifting through results 1-50 of a total of 136 returns for the term "catching" in the Baseball 101 forum. This is a general trend in this forum. There are a million threads devoted to the same things: PCR Hitting (basically, swing mechanics and rotational hitting), Gaining more power in pitching and things like that.

Basically, what I'm saying is that all the answers are here. Just try to find them! Don't just throw it out there and hope that someone digs up the answer for you. I know that alot of these are posted by people who joined specifically to ask one question. But maybe just read around a bit before posting.

Thanks alot,
-Geoff

Didn't mean to come across so strong. But I guess it's something I've been noticing for a while. Then when I read that thread (in the Web Improvements section), it really clicked. This was the first opportunity to talk about it.

... and when you do, click on the link in the lower right hand corner for the "The Coaches Guide To Training Catchers" Version II DVD. If you're at all interested in catching, it's the best $40 and best 2 hours and 40 minutes you'll ever spend. If it's not on the DVD, you don't need to know it.
